Did you dr tell you, that you had to do the diet before the surgery or is
this something you want to do on your own. I didnt have to do any diet
before surgery. But all dr's are different. My doctor said that he did not
find any medical reason for the diet that it did not really shrink the
live. Check with your dr good luck!

My surgeon will not do the surgery without a two week liquid diet, it makes
the liver smaller and less risk during surgery, it also "cleans the
system". I think also part of his theory is this is the next
test...can you do it? Should I preform the surgery? Very strict clinic and
I'm happy for it he has an excellent record. Good Luck to you.

I was on a liquid diet for 1 week before my surgery because my Dr.
recommended it. It actually helped me prepare for the 2 weeks post-op when
I was still on liquids. One thing I've discovered . . . following the Dr.
and Nut instructions has helped me cope with and adjust to the changes I'm
making in my life. I figure they know more about this than I do, so why not
follow their instructions.
Good luck.

I was on a Medifast Diet for 4 weeks before surgery. The last few days were
strictly liquid. It wasn't easy, but I did it. If I can do it, I think
anyone can.
God bless you!

According to my surgeon (a similar question was asked of him at a WLS
conference recently), going on an eating spree prior to your surgery is
enough to cause your liver to become enlarged to the point of needing to
cancel the surgery. He said there were even a few cases where they started
the surgery and had to quit due to the size of the liver (they were unable
to reach the stomach for the surgery). That being the case, I would assume
the reverse is true as well. Loosing weight and restricting your diet
immediately prior to surgery should decrease the size of the liver. As far
as "how much" and "in what amount of time", I'm sure it
varies between individuals. You really should talk to you surgeon and ask
him. He is the one who can tell you for sure, not us fellow patients. Let
him help you with suggestions, give you answers, and motivate you to
success. Don't wait until you're on the operating table, to find out if
your liver is small enough. Remember why you are doing this (all of the
health gains and a return of function to your life). You are WORTH it!
You can do anything for a week or two if the reward is big enough. As
someone who is 5 years post-op, I assure you, it has changed my life. I
feel 20 years younger, and I can do so many things now that I had given up
ever being able to do again. God Bless
