Question:
I am 2 1/2 weeks post op (gastric bypass) and I have a hard time getting in protein
I have seen on this website where people say the liquid protein is ok....my nutrionist told me these were not good because it is not the correct type of protein...has anyone else's dr. said differantly? If I never have to drink another protein shake again I'd be thrilled! — dfx73 (posted on September 11, 2009)

Hi,
I hate to say this, but don't listen to your nutrionist. We all use the
liquid protein. Correct type?? Since you are just shy of 3 weeks, I would
say just get as much liquid protein in as you can. You can't eat anything
but liquid right now. So don't try any food or you will damage your pouch
and cause serious problems. Right now you need to baby your pouch. You
won't be able to get much protein/liquids at first, it is hard. But do the
best you can. I bought the tub of Whey (pronounced way) of the powder
chocolate. It isn't bad. It isn't gritty but you can always put it in the
blender with a fruit with low sugar content. Anyway, if you just sip sip
sip every 3-5 minutes and use a minute timer to help you remind yourself
otherwise you will forget and could get dehydrated. Don't forget that any
liquid you can see through is a "liquid". So sugar free fruit
pops, tea, etc. I have to laugh at your "nutrionist". Is this a
person that is a bariatric nutrionist or a reg nutrionist? People that
have had weight loss surgery are in a different catagory for everything.
lol But the protein part, again, just drink as much as you can every 3-5
minutes. I put my water in a 64 oz sports bottle and my protein in the
same bottle. I am 3.5 yrs post op RNY, so my memory might be a little
fuzzy, but I think I marked on the bottle or wrote down how much I was
drinking. Hope this helps. I can't wait to see other answers regarding
the comment from your nutrionist. take care and start sipping away.

I had VSG on 7/31/09, and I drink at least 1 protein shake a day. Most of
the time, I have 2. I use UNJURY. You can buy it online at unjury.com. The
vanilla is really good. They also have a Chicken Soup that is good. I
cannot imagine a weight loss nutritionist telling you not to drink the
shakes, especially now when you are still on liquids. I don't know how you
will possibly get enough per day, and it's really important. By the way,
the UNJURY is medical grade protein and is very safe.
Good luck on your journey. If you will read through the Q&A, you will
find a lot of answers to most every question you may have. This has been
great support for me.

I agree with Nancy. UNJURY is good. I mix the choc, or vanilla with sugar
free hot choc and it is very good. The chicken broth flavor makes a great
afternoon snack. I also use ISOPURE bottled liquid drinks. It is whey
protein like UNJURY. I mix my water half and half with ISOPURE. I am 3
weeks out today from RNY and I am able to sip every 5 minutes or so and get
in all of my protein since I don't drink anything if it doesn't contain
protein. Good Luck on your new journey.

Im sorry guys, I didn't mean all liquid protein, I guess I wrote that
incorrectly...what I meant was the "bullet drinks" the protein
that has like 45 per oz or two? they are the ones people have been talking
about....not the soy protein isolate drinks or whey protein, those are the
ones I've been using....sorry for the confusion....I mean the ones that
look like they come out of a test tube

Hello there: I am 9 months post gastric bypass and have lost 165 lbs due to
the fact I have kept up with drinking my protein shakes. My DR started me
out on Unjury dry protein mix and the majority from everyone was to also
drink PURE PROTEIN SHAKES by Worldwide. I order both on-line and have it
shipped to me. Easy as pie. Also I eat the chewable vitamins by Building
Blocks Vitamins. My daily routine is a combo of eating all recommended
vitamins, and drinking my shakes. I wake up and eat the AM vitamins, then
I mix strawberry sorbet 2 scoops of UNJURY dry protein mix (1 scoop is 20
grams protein) in gallon container with a 16 oz bottle water (sometimes I
use 1 bottle vitamin water) add 2 cans strawberry PureProtein Shake each
can is 35 grams and I throw in a cup of pureed fresh strawberries and 1
Strawberry Yoplait Lite Yogart and mix and then pour into empty plastic
bottles to put in fridge for all day drinking. It usually makes 3 1/2
bottles of 20 oz size. They last me all day and night. I take my vitamins
thruout day as recommended. I sometimes use UNJURY chocolate mix and the
cookies and cream PureProtein shake and mix in other pureed fruit and
whatever I throw into blender. This has worked for me getting my protein in
and has helped to speed the weight loss. I cannot believe I have lost that
much so quickly. Its amazing and fantastic. My life has been turned around
in no time at all. The more protein you consume the faster weight loss and
it fills you up also. You will not lose your hair and nails grow and skin
elastiscity is wonderful also, have hardly any loose sagging skin. Do not
have to have it cut off now because hardly any sagging due to protein
intake. This has worked for me, I cannot vouch for anyone else. Best of
luck and if you do this, weight will start dropping off like magic. Of
course you must take your vitamins and also be realistic about other food
intake. I have kept it to yogart and soup, tomatoe w/parmesean cheese by
Campbell's my favorite, and other soft or liquid foods. Good Luck and let
us hear from you. Skinny in FL at 56 years old.

Liquid protein is about all I get in. I was getting 80g a day, from liquid,
but my Doc wants me to get in more calories. I was getting 600-800/day, but
she wants it at 1000. So now I take 100g of protein, liquid of course. My
meals consist of soup, sometimes an ounce of cheese, yogurt, etc. The
protein I get from food is so low, I don't really count it.

You definately need protein and if you dislike what you are drinking, find
another. I has some store bought kind and it gagged me. I found unjury and
it saved me. I bought the unflavored and mixed it withmilk. I found that
the artificial sweeteners in most brands was what I didn't tolerate. Unjury
was my saving grace and i am thankful I found it. It may seem pricey, but
really it isn't. and it gets delivered to your door, whats better than
that? But do get the proteins in. Ask your nut why she thinks they are bad.
There are different kinds ...some are for us, some are for body builders,
make sure you get the right ones! best of luck! hugs, Kim

Read my other posts. Stay away from protein drinks. Unless you plan on
regaining your weight later on.

Whey protein isolate is the most absorbable type of protein for people
who've had a restrictive type WLS. You may have a protein shake that has a
different protein. But, as I once read here: the best protein is one that
you can tolerate and will drink. So I wouldn't throw anything out, just try
another brand that has the whey isolate type of protein next time. Walmart
makes an inexpensive one called Body Fortress and it has 26g protein per
serving. Drinking protein shakes will NOT build muscles. It takes
significant strength and weight training to do that. However, drinking
protein shakes WILL help prevent muscle wasting and speed healing during
the early post op stage.
