I am dealing with the same thing. I had LB last Nov. and just since June
had I noticed my hair falling out. Not just a little bit either, but whole
patches. My surgeon told me to take Biotin 5mg/day and to use the female
version of Minoxidil 2% twice a day. He said to buy the store
brand(Walgreens), which is the exact same indregients as the Brand name but
much cheaper. He also cautioned me about not shampooing too often and not
use a comb on the spots that are bare and just use my fingers to shape my
hair. I also do a scalp massage twice a day, and one hot oil treatment
once a week. Already I am seeing improvement and I am very pleased. I was
actually thinking of getting a wig!!
Seem that this is common in WLS and in support group we discussed this many
times. I really does turn around but it's that awful time of having to go
to work with patches of baldness shining!

My hair has thinned considerably since my RNY 2 June. Start using Store
brand Rogaine (Walmart etc) and Biotin has really helped also. Where some
of my friends really lost mine has thinned much less and no bald spot here
(feel very blessed.) Just remember protein is the internal answer.
Good luck

Hi, had RNY 7/1/08..didnt start to lose hair till 2months later, then I have
had 6 EGD's. Took my vitamines and added the extra Biotin daily and my
protein with extra aminos and now my hair is great..came back curly! I have
always had straight hair..paid for perms! I no longer will need to pay for
a perm. Hope it works the same for everyone else!

everyone is right about the protien but I also am using a product called
Nioxan. It is a 3 step shampoo, conditioner and afterproduct which your
hairdresser should be able to get you. (not sold in stores but through
beauty suppy sells). It really works. It is around $40 but will last
about 3 months depending on how often you wash your hair. It really works
if you do it regularly. good luck

Hi! I agree with the other posters. I am 13 months out. I noticed my hair
falling out at about the 50 lb mark. I upped my protein levels and added
biotin every other day. I noticed the new growth about 3 weeks later. My
hair is thinner than before surgery, but I am thinking that peri~menopause
may have something to do with it also.So it may have been thinner even
without surgery. It is not a problem for me. I am happy with the new me!
Best of luck to all! hugs n God Bless, Kim

Hair loss for me started at 5 months and lasted for 3. It was upsetting.
Now it is growing back and is so annoying. I have little short frizzy stuff
everywhere. It looks like I never brush it. Working on finding a product
to andle the mess as it grows back in. I may just cut it short and deal
with it that way.
It was thick to start and so the thinning did not show much. Now it is
thick again just hard to control.

I too had experienced hair thinning, 5 months after having RNY. I found a
vitamin specifically formulated for building strong healthy hair - Silica
Complex. It contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, betaine and
horsetail extract. Consumption of this supplement almost immediately
retarded my hair loss and renewed my dull lifeless hair. I continue taking
this supplement daily and will continue taking this supplement throughout
my life.
