Question:
Hair loss

I am 15 months out and the hair loss is still really bad, how long does this last? I knew it would happen but I thought it would stop by now??    — lesleigh07 (posted on March 21, 2009)

I am a 21 months out and never experience hair lose. But I made sure that I took all the required vitamins and eat lots of protiens, beans, egg, milk, cottage cheese, chicken, fish. I think you should discuss this with your doctor and let him recomment some changes in your diet, or new vitamins. Good luck

Hi my hair was very think and so I didn't worry about losing it but about four months out it started to really come out, I wasn't eating much protein at the time, so I started the bariatric Iron pills and protein shakes and it finally stopped coming out, I now have a very healthy head of hair again, this next month will be my year anniversary for my surgery. I beleive that your hair will stop coming out and you'll be fine. Jean:)

At 15 mos out is too long to be surgery related...You need labs and make sure to get your thyroid checked! Don't ignore this symptom...Set up an appointment. Everytime something goes really wrong with my vitamins or thyroid...my hair falls out as the first sign. The longer you wait the more symptoms that will show up as you get worse! Don't get worse! It's usually just a matter of upping vitmins or getting on thyroid meds...

I fully agree with Anita. The hair loss from surgery is a combination of shock to the body from a major surgery and relative protein deficiency but as far out as you are those reasons should have resolved. I would check with your surgeon or PCP. When I was in office practice I worked up several women with unexpected hair loss (none were wls patients) and found 3 hypothyroid and 2 severely anemic so it is worth looking into, as these things are very treatable. Good luck and hang in there. Good luck

I would ask to have my thyroid levels checked with regard to my hair loss. Unless you are over 60, then like me you could me part of the inheriting part of "male pattern baldness" which originates from women. Marti in San Jose

hi! I am 9 months out and my hair started coming out around 4 months out...about 50 lbs off...but at about 6-7 months it started to regrow. I did up my protein levels (70g) and I faithfully take my vitamins. Hormones played a part in my loss pre surgery, but since I have good healthy hair again. Good luck to you and do talk with dr or nut about your diet and other things that could cause this to happen so far out. Hugs, Kim

I wish I knew the answer to this. I'm 18 months post op and my hair is still falling out like crazy. Fortunately my hair is very thick so, except for finding hair everywhere, it hasn't been a problem.

I lost my hair too but the strange thing is - it grew back but only to the level of stubs. DON'T KNOW WHY.
