Question:
I am 5 weks out from gastric bypass and have a couple questions.
Does anybody out there ever eat bread?? I realize it can be very bad for you but there are some that dont seem to be too bad. Also,I am very nauseous when I get up in the morning and for a good part of the day.Any suggestions??Finally,I have been told I can walk, walk, walk, but what about joining an exercise group like CURVES? It is all machines that work on resistance. Thanks so much, Mary — mary beauregard (posted on February 13, 2009)

Yes, I eat bread. I am 6 months out and find I can eat anything in small
amounts. I am very careful about it. I also had alot of nausea in the
beginning. Are you eating and keeping it down? Mine just went away at
about 2 months.

Hi Mary - Curves is a great place to get started. you should still walk -
but Curves offers you ways of getting moving that is not just walking. i
did it for a year before surgery and up to 3 years after surgery. i am 3
1/2yrs out and now have a personal training 2x a week, running during the
week and in the best shape ever. i lost about 140lbs and went through a
body lift. if you really start working out at curves - its great becuase
its good for people who aren't in shape and can work yourself into a place
where you are in good shape. the resistance really helps people. plus its
fun to get to know all the people there. good luck with your journey!
thanks

Curves is great but wait till your doctor says it is ok. You dont want to
pull anything internal while you are still healing. Usually by two months
it is fine.
Bread takes up space for protiens so go light in this area if you eat them
at all. High fiber and look at the protien count in the bread. I use the
cocktail rye bread to use. I really like it.

I eat bread! Not daily, not white bread either...I choose my bread wisely
and eat it in moderation...Choose one that says WHOLE GRAIN...I still eat a
piece of italian bread now and then dipped in olive oil and spices as
well...I eat at subway as well...Bread is not a "bad thing" you
just have to eat it in moderation. If bread is a trigger for other white
carby foods, (cake, cookies, white bread) avoid it if you can! I have no
trouble eating bread once or twice a week...rather than several pieces with
every meal as I did pre op! Those days are over! Be careful too...It gets
stuck really easy and can be quite painful...THAT is not good! And YES!
EXERCISE! Personally, I hate gyms, but I exercise on my own...No matter
how you do it ...JUST DO IT! I believe that exercise is the main key to
maintaining weight loss long term.

Yes, I have eaten bread. You're right it goes down fine, but after it
expands in the pouch it is very uncomfortabe. I generally feel bloated and
have trouble breathing I feel so full. Carbs are not my friend. I get
dumping from carbohydrates.

Mary,
You might want to make sure that you feel up to joining Curves and you
might also check into all their programs.
If machines do most or all the work then your muscles don't which is what
you want. Light exercise and aerobics are good as tolerated. Just a
suggestion.

Hi! I am 8 months out and I occasionally eat wheat bread. 100%whole wheat.
But not often and not even a full slice. I cut the crusts off.lol I also
belong to curves and have for years. Once the doctor gives the ok, its a
great place to work out and not feel self consious. As far as the nausea
goes, do you take a vitamin int he morning? I did for a week and it made me
feel sick as vitamins are harsh on the stomach. So i stopped taking it
first thing. Now I get my protein shake in and wait a lil bit then take my
vitamin. Hope this helps. Good luck and have a great day! hugs, kim

my husband just stopped eating bread after 2.5 years -- he was doing a
great job of GAINING back his weight -- so now he eats wraps -- i do not
eat bread at all -- it will only fill me up with empty calories and no
nutrients -- so why bother -- at least that is my attitude :)

For the nausea--make sure you are eating enough and getting enough water.
You probably aren't experiencing hunger like before surgery but you'll get
nausea instead. Bread is problematic for me--I like it too much! I'm not
crazy about the whole grain breads. I sometimes eat a small bit of toast or
a part of a bagel--I never allow myself to even contemplate eating a whole
bagel! I bet I could--and I bet it would hurt--or cause me to dump....

Hi Mary, I am 2 months and 2 days out LAP RNY. I haven't had a ny bread, a
few crackers here and there. I have bought some of the mini pitas but
haven't had any yet.
I started Curves here in the islands two weeks ago after getting the all
clear from my Doctor. It is great! I go 3 times weekly and then walk the
other days, down 40# so far, feeling great! All the best to you and keep up
the good work. carolcooper
