Question:
Am I doing something wrong??

I had open rny on 1/5/09. SO, when I started my liquid diet on 12/7/08, I weighed 408. Morning of surgery I weighed 375. I weighed myself yesterday and I weighed 351. I feel like I am not losing as fast as I should. I am following my orders to the T. I eat 70 grams of protein a day. I eat between 500-800 calories daily, and I excersice 25 minutes in the morning, and 25 in the evening. Please tell me what im doing wrong and why im not losing faster. I see women on here who are losing like 30 pounds a month, and they are WAY smaller than me. HELP!!!!    — jackie L. (posted on February 4, 2009)

Just remember one thing...One size does not fit all! We all are different. Follow your directives and know that you will be smaller, sooner! If you expect...you will be frustrated. Let go and enjoy YOUR recovery one pound at a time! Good luck, Rena

Why are you complaining.....that's great that you have lost that amount. I had the realize band on 12/22 and I haven't even lost 20 lbs. If I lost that much weight I wouldn't know what to do with myself....

You need to get some perspective here. First of all, I don't know of anybody healthy who's losing 30 lbs a month. Second, I don't know who gave you the idea that WLS was going to be some magic bullet that suddenly going to make you skinny--it's not. You need to know now that it WILL slow down, and you will hit plateaus, and you will have to find a way to deal mentally with that. Calm down. Take a deep breath. And remember that it took you a lot longer than two months to put that weight on. Third, eveybody is different. Stop worrying about what everybody else is doing and just focus on doing what's right for YOU. Listen to you doctor, and listen to your body.

Well that makes you 3lbs shy of losing 30lbs in a month. You are definately working hard and that is extremely important in this journey. But don't forget to take in the process and jot down the lessons so when your weight loss slows down, you'll have the lessons that you gained to sustain you. You are doing FABULOUS don't short change yourself. :)

You are doing great! Don't worry about what others are doing...Just stay on track and enjoy the journey...It goes so fast! It might not seem like it now...but you'll be looking back one day wondering where the years went! I know!

Start looking at the difference in your life. Small things like can you tie your shoes more comfortably or are you walking without feeling the chest tightening. You are still fresh in losing the weight. Maybe you should stop weighing yourself for a week to see if that doesn't make a difference. Plateaus happen even if we don't want them too. But you will overcome this. You are following the directions so that's great. Are you in any pain? If not that's even better. Remember that just because you aren't losing weight doesn't mean that your insides aren't trying to catch up with other weight loss on the outside. Keep doing what you are doing. Before you know it this plateau will pass. Best wishes. Again keep up the good work. Hugs, Corina

I agree with the other posts. Your are doing fabulous....don't get discouraged. You lost a substantial amount of weight prior to surgery.......that's great! Celebrate..and continue to do so. I had Lap RNY on 12/9/08 and just had my 8 week check up with my surgeon. He told me that average weight loss for 2 months is 30-40 lbs. You've amlost done that, so you are right on track! We are all different and therefore will lose weight differently. It's time to celebrate "you" girlfriend! YOU are doing just fine! Keep up the good work! I am right there with you.....I was at 396......can't tell that I've lost, because there is sooooooooooo much to lose, but I am now getting re-aquainted with my feet! LOL. PLUS, feel soooooo much better and that's something in itself! I'm cheering for you! LisaRae

When I mentioned to my surgeon I thought I wasn't losing fast enough, he reminded me that if I were to lose more than 10-12 pounds in a month that part of it would be muscle. You DO NOT WANT TO LOSE MUSCLE! Does your surgeon check your muscle and fat loss each month? I think it is important - it lets you know if you are doing everything right or not. As long as you are losing fat, and not muscle, you are track. You lose more weight in the first few months because you are losing a lot of water weight - and you will lose some muscle at first because you aren't able to take in enough protein. But as you get further out - say 3 and 4 months out - you should have no problem getting in your protein in some form or another. You are doing great. You wouldn't have been able to do what you have done without the surgery! You are down a total of 57 lbs in 2 months! That is fantastic. I have slowed down to about 10-12 lbs loss a month, and I am thrilled with that - especially since I am maintaining my muscle mass - and don't forget to look at the non-scale victories! Could you have done nearly an hour of exercise before surgery? Are you moving around better? Don't forget to take your measurements at the beginning of each month. It's amazing how many inches you lose - even when the scale might be at a plateau - and it will happen! If you want to talk more, e-mail me at [email protected] or request me to be your friend - I'd love to have another!

EVERYONE LOSES DIFFERENTLY!! You MUST remember that. I had my lapRNY on 1-15-09 and I've lost 24 lbs so far also. We are right in the same boat with losing. If you are following everything to a "T" and doing and eating what you should, I wouldn't get so discouraged. The more you stress about it the worse you will get. Maybe this coming month you'll lose double of what you have already. Who knows! Like I said, everyone loses differently and at their bodies own pace. You should be excited that you've already lost 57 lbs! That's wonderful!

Hi, Jackie, My name is Barb. Had lap RNY July 07. The weight loss is different for everybody. It sounds like you're right on track, to me. I lost just a little quicker because I had post surgical issues with nausea and vomiting, but I still lost 140# by December. Then weight loss slowed down to a trickle and I maintained at 150#. I still would like to lose 10 more pounds, but 150# is good. Just be patient. Keep doing what you're doing--you're doing everything right. And if you do have concerns, be sure to contact your surgeon's office. Do you have access to a dietician? They can be a great resource post-op and you can usually take care of issues over the phone. It will happen for you--be patient. Good luck! Barb :)

You've lost 57 lbs in two months! Just think about it an and focus on that for a moment. That is unbelievable. I understand that you're asking because you thought it would go faster, but still, I think it would serve you better to focus on that and even more importantly, how you have followed a food plan so well for this amount of time. Have you ever done that? Many people have, but I wasn't able to. Be very proud of that. We've all been told - do the right thing and the weight will come off and stay off. I assume you know, by the way, that the weight loss will slow down now that you're at this point. Best of luck to you

You are honestly disappointed with 57 pounds in 2 months? Really? That is amazing by anyone's standards. I'm concerned that you may have unrealistic expectations and when the "honeymoon period" is over, you may really struggle. Please settle in speak with your surgeon/nutritionist about what is to be expected. Faster isn't always better. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC
