Question:
has anybody had missed periods for longer than 6 months because of there weight?
the doctor put me on birth control to regulate my period and I had a period 1x that month and none after. I was advised to lose 15 lbs I did that and still no period. I would like to conceive another child but it doesn't look to good does anybody know what I should do? — ms.angie (posted on October 18, 2008)

I would like more information. Have you had WLS? If yes, what kind and
where are you with your weight? Do you have PCOS? Are you still taking
the BCP's? If so, is it the kind that lets you have only 4 periods per
year? Did your OBGYN put you on the BCP's or was it done by your PCP?
Have you had a complete workup?
When I was at my highest weight, I had very irregular periods. Once I lost
a significant amount of weight, they became regular again.
Waiting to hear back from you and wishing you the best of luck,

I agree with Dawn: need more information to answer.
Most overweight people will have period irregularities. Most of these
disappear with weight loss but not all. Fear not though, there are many
ways to try and regulate your cycle or increase fertility chances. =-)

I haven't had my period in a year. I get ultrasounds every 3 months just to
check for cysts. I had my right uvary removed in 2005,due to cysts. After
that I was only supposed to get a period every other month.I did for a
little while and then it stopped. My remaining ovary had a cyst earlier
this year, but a small one, two ultrasounds later it was gone. I also get
regular CA-125 blood test which detects the presence of cancer in your
body.Thank god thats been negative.
I don't know what to tell you except to be proactive. Keep bothering your
OB/GYN,tell him you want another child at some point, and that you lost the
15 lbs. that was asked of you.

I was 231 lbs, had a dx of pcos, had a period about 2x a yr if lucky or i'd
have heavy spotting for like 6 months straight and then nothing for 8
months. all the dr wanted to try was birth control but i wanted to conceive
so why would i take the birth control??? I changed dr's a bunch of times
and finally found a female dr who put me on glucaphage and after 3 months
on the pills i started having normal periods after my whole life being
irregular- (im 33 now) anyway- i took clomid to conceive and after 2 rounds
of it- i got one gorgeous son!!! it has been 8 years and i have not been
able to conceive (i stopped the glucaphage after i had my son and
everything went irregular again) on my own again but now since the wls i
am returning to normal. i will try a couple of months and then try the
clomid again. talk to ur dr about the clomid. it forces your ovaries to
ovulate, the dr said if you have no period you have no egg- therefore u
can't get pregnant- so they have to force ovulation. good luck!

Not sure if you've had WLS surgery, but I too had no periods for 2 years
after my GBP. My gynecologist told me that I was in early menopause (I was
42 at the time). So she put me on estradiol and prometrium hormones to give
me a period. Interestingly enough, when my body weight regulated and stayed
constant, my periods returned - regularly! Weird? So I no longer take the
prometrium. When I was heavy, my cycles were "normal", but rapid
weight loss threw me a curve. I have not tried to concieve, but I feel
better knowing that my body is returning to it's homeostasis! -Darlene

I weight 282 and I don't have a period unless I lose about 40 pounds then I
start having one. Then as usual I gain the weight back and quit having
them. I am hoping to have gastric bypass this year. Waiting on insurance
approval.

Wow! I have a period about every 3 months. I never thought it could be
from being overweight. I used to have two periods a month and bleed very
high. The doctor said my estrogen was too high. They put me on
perestergen SP? I still had them twice a month but they were very light.
The Doctor took me off of it about a year ago and I very seldem have
periods now. I thought I might be going thru pre Metapause. I am having
WLS on the 23rd of this month and maybe I will find out if it is because of
being overweight or just getting old. I hope you find the answer your
looking for soon. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless,
Penny

You sound exactly like me before my surgery. Before my surgery my daughter
was conceived with the use of fertility treatments because I have
polycystic ovarian syndrome. I'm not sure if you know what PCOS is but it
sounds like you may need to see your doctor about it. I am 8 months post op
RNY and I now have periods every month. I'm still not sure if I am
ovulating but we are trying to get pregnant as well. If you would like more
information about PCOS you can email me or their are many websites out
there about it.
Good luck to you and God Bless!!

I forgot to mention one thing. A friend of mine who also has PCOS and has
not had surgery recently found out that she is pregnant after 8 1/2 years
of trying. She started taking fish oil pills (which I am now taking as
well) because she read that it helps with fertility in PCOS people. It was
very shortly after she began taking them that she found out that she's
pregnant.
