Question:
Anyone have an umbilical hernia Before wls?
Did anyone have an umbilical hernia before wls and did it affect being qualified for wls? — Ginjer (posted on October 13, 2008)

They can repair an umbilical hernia when they do weight loss surgery
although keep in mind that hernia repairs are major surgery and it may
prolong your hospital stay and increase your time off from work.

Hi Jennifer,I haven't had wls yet,my first orientation is Oct.22,however,I
too have an umbilical hernia. My PCP said that approval would probably be
easier to get due to the fact that they could do both surgical procedures @
the same time. Best of luck to you!!!!!!

I just watched an RNY surgery where they repaired an imbilical hernia on
"Big Medicine" (TLC Discovery Channel) ...It was on an 800+ pound
man!

I had an umbilical hernia and a sizable hiatal hernia. It didn't stop
me...they fixed both hernias at the same time as my Lap Roux-n-Y! I think
it complicated my recovery for three months but I was OK. I have lost 67
pounds since 4/30/08 for a total of 96 pounds since my application date at
Duke WLS Center.

I had one repaired in March 2006 and had wls May 2008. The dr said i had
scar tissue probably from that and a hysterectomy in 2002 but all went
well.

I also had a hernia in the same place as you and I had to have surgery
again later after i had the wls, the doctor will tell you when it is time
for that surgery. It doesn't interfere with the wls surgery you will still
have the wls.

I have the umbilical hernia and since it wasn't that big they left it
alone. Still hasn't bothered me.

I have been looking that kind of thing up myself. I have one also but read
an article where it can be used as an excuse for the doctor to do a tummy
tuck later for the loose skin and file it as correcting hernias. When I get
my first appointment I am asking if this is possible.

I had my hernia's repaired when I had my revison to ERNY. I am glad they
can do the repair all at once. I don't have to be cut twice. But I had to
have emergency surgery to repair a huge umblical hernia back in 2004. That
was major surgery but i keep getting hernia's. I think it makes the
approval process go faster because you have hernia's that need attention

I had an umbilical hernia repair in February of 2004, then had RNY in May
of 2004. My surgeon said that if there was a lot of scar tissue, it may
preclude me from having the RNY laproscopic, but wouldn't prevent the
surgery. When I came out of surgery he said my previous surgeon did a fine
job. He wondered why I didn't wait and have both done together, but the
initial surgeon felt that it could be dangerous to wait any longer. If you
can wait, it may be advantageous to do so. But if you must do this one
before bariatric surgery, it doesn't mean you can't still have that
surgery. Best wishes for health and happiness always.

I did not know I had a hernia until I woke up from my wls to find a hernia
repair had occurred as well! I has definately lengthened my recovery
period but at least it is repaired. I have lost weight and now I don't
have to worry about it. Good luck with yours.

from happening again, when Dr Avara did my RNY he just went in above my
belly button. Hope this helped.

Great question, I have one too. In my initial consult with Dr. Jawad he
said he would repair it at the same time he does my lapro RNY. I didn't
think that it would extend my recovery time though. I planned on using the
full 6 weeks I'm allowed at work for part-time disability. Do you think
recovery from both will be longer than that? Thanks

In 2002 I had emergency surgery for an umbilical hernia w/resection. When
I had my sleeve on 03/08, my surgeon repaired a hiatal hernia at the same
time. I was off work 3 weeks longer than expected, with a total of 5
weeks. Lots of pain in the beginning. But all went very well.

Hi Jennifer. I've had an umbilical hernia all of my life. I never had any
trouble with or from it. I had LAP RNY on 2/21/08 and it had absolutely no
effect on my surgery at all. My surgeon didn't feel it needed to be
repaired and I still have it. I'm not suffering from any effects post op
either. It's been almost 8 months and I'm down 121 pounds. Good luck to
you! Marion
