Question:
Can I take fish oil pills?

I have polycystic ovarian syndrome. However, since about 3-4 months post op ( I am 8 months post-op now) I have had a period every month even though they don't come equal lengths apart yet. As of recently I have lost 102 lb. and have been told that it would be okay, however not recommended, to try and get pregnant. A friend of mine who also has PCOS told me that after 8 1/2 years of trying to get pregnant she recently found out that they are. She said that she read that fish oil is supposed to help with fertility in PCOS people and that she had just began taking it when she found out that she's pregnant. I already bought the pills but I am afraid to start taking them because I am not sure if it will effect my pouch negatively. Does anyone know if it's okay to take fish oil? Also, for those who have taken it, how did it effect you? Thanks, Angie    — Sillyguts (posted on October 8, 2008)

Fish oil tablets always make me have a burpy back-taste that kind of keeps lingering after I take them. In other worids they dont just let you swallow them and forget you took them. They kind of keep reminding you they're there in your upper digestive system by getting that "aftertaste". and I dont find it pleasant. Even if I ate food with them. With as small a qty of food post op folks are supposed to eat, I dont see how that would work. Is there any other way to get the fish oil that anyone knows of? They always come in those clear capsules with yellow oil on the inside. Is there any other way to get them in a concentrated form ? (Other than normally from certain fish itself (salmon e.g. which is high in Omega -III?) (but that's not the concentrated form you are after?.. I am barging in here because I myself would love to be able to take them but I just dont like how they linger in my system --itson the unpleasant side. Hope you get an answer that assists you, take care..

I take Mega Red Krill Oil daily...It is 3 times the concentrate of regular fish oil in a SMALLER gel cap...No fish burps and is loaded with omega health benefits! It's quite expensive at about $20 a bottle, but I began taking it when I became anemic and needed all the help with my blood cells, brain and heart functions! I take it regulary now...My health is more important tome than cost...Coromega is also a GREAT fish oil...but leaves me fish burps that I cannot handle! It's a "WOW....What on earth was that" kinda flavor that you squeese into your unsuspecting taste buds...I promise you have never tasted anything quite so weird! LOL I don't hate it...but...the after ornage or lime flavored fish burps are a bit too much for me! If you do take a fish oil other than mega red...make sure it is pharmecutical quality or says it has been tested and it free of mercury and fish toxins! Some fish oils can do more harm in toxins than good in omega's! http://www.schiffmegared.com/faq.asp?a=why_is_it_better

You should really ask your doctor about this one, hon. Don't depend on anyone else when it comes to your meds and supplements. What most people don't know is fish oil also has anticoagulant properties. Talk with your doctor.

My sirgeon and nut recommended that I take fish oil... sp that's not a problem. The pills what you buy in the store are what's the problem... hard to swallow and digest! What I found was a fish oil in a "paste-like" orm. Don't get freaked out thinking "ugh, paste." This tastes like a dreamsicle!! They are from COROMEGA, their website is www.coromega.com . Their website has all of the stores listed in your area where you can buy the supplement. I ended up getting mine at a health food store, which meant it cost more (because they always jack up the prices). But if I remember right you can order right from the site, I'm sure it would be cheaper. I love the taste and it has really helped my skin (and I'm sure other things I have no idea about). Good Luck!

Those fish oil capsules either don't stay down for me or they leave an awful aftertaste. What I use is the Coromega supplements. They are a pudding like supplement and leave no aftertaste and are easy digestible. Check it out. http://www.coromega.com/ That might help you determine what you can use to supplement Omega3 in your diet.

I also have PCOS. Best of luck to you in your journey to good health! I am 7 mos post RNY and doing well. I don't think fish oil will hurt your pouch and I know it's good for us, however, that urpy burpy fish oil taste is bad. I take P4L vitamins, liquid one once per day, and it has fish oils in it. I never get the urpies from it and don't taste any oil at all. It's a great product. www.passion4lifevitmains.com/tarra

I take MA Omega III, It completely dissolves in water after 20 minutes. I have taken it for years. Send me a message and I will let you know where to get it.

I have PCOS and endometriosis. At 18 months post-op (almost to the day!) I got pregnant. I don't know for sure if it was the omega (fish oil) supplements I used- those were the Cormega Orange Pudding-like packets- or if it was just simply weight lost- I was down about 140 pounds- but I hadn't had particularly regular periods either..... Good luck to you if this is something you want to pursue! I will tell you- the hardest thing I found about being pregnant post op (I had my DD pre-op) is eating enough of the right things. WIC has had to develop new guidelines for post-ops because we just aren't physically capable of eating all that "they" say we need to. If you can drink your protein, I highly recommend at least 1 protein dirnk a day

I'm RNY over 2-1/2 years ago. I've taken 3 fish oil capsules per day since I was released from hospital (as I was doing prior to surgery). My doctors are aware of this and there has never been one hint of "don't do it". The antioxidant benefits of fish oil are well published.
