Question:
Do protein shakes count as a meal or a liquid?
I'm just a week out, but i'm allowed to be on the pureed stage. I am having a very difficult time with the protein intake. I've tried the powders, and the drinks, and they're just horrible. They make me want to throw up (which is something i definitely DO NOT want to do). I mixed the powder into a shake, and that was tolerable, but 2 sips and i was full. Are protein shakes supposed to be considered as a meal? or a liquid in between? I tried both ways, but either way i wind up too full before i'm even 1/4 of the way done with it. The shake is only about 8oz, and i've tried just sipping throught the day, but it gets me way too full. Please help! I've heard of liquid protein in vials.. has anybody tried this? is it a good thing to do? Thanks!! — nyckitty (posted on March 5, 2008)

The vials are Profect. This is the quickest way to get in your protein.
Just one sip, o.k. maybe two. They are not so good room temperature, but
tolerable right out of the refrigerator. The protein shakes may be too
thick. I know the smell of the protein shake alone would make me nauseas.

The liquid before you make the shake counts as a liquid and the protien
counds as a meal. Liquids should pass through your pouch to the gut fairly
easily, but you may be swollen and the opening may be still small. In the
first weeks following surgery, I took 1 hour to drink an 16 oz. bottle of
watter and now I cna do it in just a few minutes. However its been three
months for me. Just do the best you can and keep trying to get all that
shake down even if it take an hour or more. I have not found anything else
to get the protein other than meats, which you will have to add liquid and
puree to eat when your doctor OK's you to go to the next step. Try other
dairy like yougart.

8 ounces is too much, unless you plan on sipping on it for an hour. I used
the IsoPure whey protein shakes, mixing one scoop with about 3 oz of water
and 3 ice cubes, and then blendng in a Magic Bullet. I've also used the
vanilla flavored, and added 1/2 banana, or strawberries, blueberries, etc.
to vary the flavor. I agree that some of the premixed protein drinks do not
taste very good. I hear this from some of my fellow support group members,
and they will mix crystal lite or fuze drinks with these premixed protein
drinks, and sip on them in a water bottle for their needed supplemental
protein.

Better days ahead! My surgeon told me not to drink my calaries. He
indicated that I should try to drink water (crystal light or propel) and
eat protein. Dont worry, you're not feeling well right now to eat... but,
you will... There are better days ahead. Try water with slices of
cucumbers (delicious)... good luck.

I was open surgery, and I was on liquids for 2-3 weeks, before graduating
to pureed foods.
Relax, your tastes will change, and sip your 2 sips as you can, all day if
you have to. Your insides are all swollen and bloated still, it'll get much
better soon.

The New-Whey Liquid Protein, 2oz vial, 25g of protein, is pretty good - a
little expensive at almost $36 for 12 vials.
I like the Pro-Stat101. You get 15g of protein in 1oz and it costs less
than $0.90 per serving (and available at a discount if you buy more at one
time). Just google it to find out where you can get it (my bariatric
surgeon sells is). Good luck!

You might want to try protein capsules. They're sold under the brand
Capsul-Pro by Nashua Nutrition www.nashuanutrition.com No bloating, no
taste issues. Good luck!

I had the same problem at first. I got Designer Whey from GNC in the fruit
flavors and mixed it with FOUR ounces of water at first. When I got to
where I could do that without discomfort, I gradually increased the water.
If you're mixing with milk that could account for the trouble too. Switch
to water for now. Good Luck!

you need to do the yogurt, Cottage cheese all the soft foods . I am not
sure but my Dr. told me no shakes especially the Chocolate ones... No
Chocolate! it will make you sick. Don't rush things... do the soft foods
then SLOWLY get into the Chicken, Fish types of food. CHEW thoroughly...
your not out that long. I have lost 248 Lbs in 12 months... With no
shakes.... I fweel fantastic and the Dr.s are very happy... (so am I)...
Eventually you will be able to eat solids ... take your time. Dont look at
how far you have to go!! Just look how far you have come!

i agree with bob freese completely. Eat your protein, I made homemade soups
(or even can if u must) but i put protein (chicken or beef) and plenty of
vegs and beans and then i pureed them and that was so good. I got my
proteins in when I was on pureed foods. eat your protein instead of
drinking it so much better for you. good luck!!! linda

I had lapband but was told 1/4 cup was a meal if you can get that much
down. My doc said the first week you may not even be able to have 1/4cup.
Even on the puree stage 1/4 cup was still a meal. I didn't like any of the
protein drinks but s/f carnation instant breakfast was on my approved list.

Another important heads up on the shakes. They should be consumed withing
20 minutes of making them. They begin to deteriorate and develop bacteria.
I have let them sit too long..and have definitely tasted the change..yuck.
So...only make what you can consume at a time...if you've made too
much...toss it. Regards~

Depends on how you make them and what you were told. At first, they were
pretty much a meal. At 13 yrs, they are a beverage and I do 4 small meals.
These are what I use, and I consume within 15-
20 minutes.
Any of these are what I use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
They deliver 30g protein, less than 3g sugar, less than 200 calories, when
made with water.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).
