Question:
I'm 3 weeks out of surgery and the weight loss has stopped!

Is it normal for the weight loss to stop or slow down? I'm starting to get really worried. I lost 25lbs in December but nothing since then. I'm eating about 500-700 calories a day, is that too much? There is not a support group here. Help please!!    — Amanda Kirby (posted on January 8, 2008)

Maybe you are not getting enough calories for the activity you may be doing and your body is going into starvation mode. Sometimes that can make a difference. Did you change something? PMS? Stress? All these can factor into it but do not be discouraged! I remember when I plataued the first time I thought I was going to die, but then the next week my normal weight loss doubled so don't be too hard on yourself! Good Luck!

I am also 1 mo. out of surgery (Dec. 10) Doing everything right. Just beginning to be able to eat 3-4 oz. of protein and I have not lost for 4-5 days. I lost 37 lbs. from my liquid diet till now. I have read that this is "normal" as our bodies are in shock and now think if we don't loose we will begin to "eat". I think if we just keep doing the right things the weight will drop all of a sudden again! God bless. C. Garber

Was just at my doctors yesterday for my first pre op visit, lost 18 # for my 2 wk and 3 day liquid diet. I asked if this was normal and they had said yes but they had also told me that the body was also in a shock and the weight lose would also slow down for a time to. Keep up with your diet, instructions and faith. You can always call your nutritionist and/or physicians office and they could probably tell you what is normal for your stage. But then again this is also a wonderful outlet with alot of wonderful people. :)

Twenty five pounds is fantastic! Congrats on your weight loss. Please don't feel frustrated because you haven't lost anything yet this month. Just keep doing like you are because you seem to have a real handle on what your suppose to be doing. Just remember we didn't put the weight on over night, so please be patient and before you realize it the weight will feel as if it's melting off.

Weigh loss plateaus are encountered, but normally not too soon past surgery. I'd suggest monitoring your water intake closely, and doing some type of daily exercise. You need to eat protein as the first portion of your meal. Regular eating of the foods allowed, snacking on healthy foods, drinking water, and exercise are all a protocol for proper weight loss. There is no support group in your area? I have at least 4 within 40 miles of my home, and I attend as many as possible monthly. Check with your doctor, or the obesity help office--there is probably another support group somewhere near you.

You should only be on pureed foods so not sure how your getting in 500-700 calories a day. BUT 25 lbs is great! Stay OFF the scale every day. You should only weigh about every week or even every 2 weeks. I don't weigh myself but once a month as I know for a fact there is a bunch of inch loss going on when my weight isn't moving fast enough for me. Increase your water intake and your protein intake. Your body might have gone into starvation mode and it doesn't want to let go which could have resulted in this slight stall. Walk walk walk walk as much as you can and as soon as you are able to exercise do so. Hang in there, watch what you eat when you are able to (intro SOME foods at about 4 weeks and work your way up to the foods we should be eating from there), and make sure you get the protein and water in! Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side.

I had my Surgery on 11-27-07 and I am down almost 50 lbs but I had not lost anything in the last 2 weeks until today. The scale finally moved and jumped down another 8 lbs. Hang in there sometimes it will go down every couple of day's and sometimes you will see no change at all for a couple of weeks and then BOOM.
