Question:
had the surgery and no weight loss

I'm about 2 weeks post-op and haven't lost a thing. I did the liquid diet for one week and now a soft diet. I'm always hungry and even cheated twice. Once with ice cream and the other a chocolate bar neither one bothered me, I had no dumping syndrome which I thought I would. So I can eat like I did before and I'm not losing any weight is this normal?    — ladyyankeefan (posted on June 12, 2007)

You were given a tool. If you are not eating what your doctor said for you to eat, then you aren't going to lose. You are cheating at 2 weeks?? Why did you bother to have surgery? It's not a quick fix, it's a life long plan to be healthier. Stick to what your doctor says, AND I KNOW he didn't say chocolate bars and ice cream. Follow what the doctor says to eat, and you will lose weight.

Carol, Your 2nd week diet should only consist of clear liquids and protein shakes, i.e. SLim Fast Low Carb or Dr. Atkins. If you are drink decaf tea, chicken or beef broth, crystal light, every 30 minutes then you should be loosing. Are you taking your vitamins. Of course every one is different; however, I don't think it's normal that you have not lost weight in the 2 weeks since the surgery. Did you have your 1 week post op -- what did your surgeon say about the lack of weight loss? I ask you to remember and keep remembering what prompted you to have this surgery and hopefully that will motivate you to stay on the eating trend that we are suppose to go through after the surgery. Remember your stomach is new and is still healing -- you don't want to cause a stricture or stretch your pouch. Good Luck and you can do this.

I can not belive In my wildest imangination that you could have eaten a candy bar and icecream two weeks out out. I am three months out and I still can't eat alot of things. Well my doctors and nut had me on liquids for the first month and then from 1 -2 months soft proteins. I only just started eating chicken , beef, turkey , fish as of lately. I am 3 months out tomorrow I have lost 76 lbs. follow what the doctor says and you will lose weight. Why go through what we went through to just go back to your old eating habits. I wouldn't do that. good luck to you and keep the faith

If you had lap band surgery, your band hasn't been filled to create any restriction. You will get a fill after a couple of weeks - you should have post-op visits set up with the surgeon. Until then, your "tool" hasn't been activated.

WOW....Carol. I cannot imagine eating a candy bar/ice cream that early. Having said that - two things.....why would you eat those things when you are making lifestyle changes to better your life and to use your tool effectively and efficiently? I know several women who had RNY and still feel hungry (never lost their appetite) and who can eat anything still after surgery, like you. All of these things are "side effects" from surgery and are not guaranteed. Please remember that this surgery isn't for those who are not going to change their lifestyles and who are not going to get their mental addictions under control or changed. This is a TOOL, not a miracle, fix all, eat what you want, when you want type of deal. I would visit your surgeon and make sure - he can run tests - to verify things were done correctly, etc. But do know that not everyone loses their appetite and not everyone will be restrivtive as to what they can tolerate. It's a tool....I hope you get to use it .. and soon!

Hi Carol: I see you had lap band surgery....not rny. I think some of the people who answered you think you had rny. I am five weeks out from lap band and initially lost some weight, but my doc put me back on full foods at 3.5 weeks and I currently have no restriction. With Lap Band, you won't get dumping. That is with the RNY. With no fill in your band yet, you may be just healed well and need to wait to get your fill. My doc won't do them until you are six weeks out, so it has been tough. I HATE to diet, so it has been one good day, one bad day for me. Call your doc and see if it is normal for you not to loose at all. Because I have heard that some people do not loose at all until they get a fill or two. Are you posting on the Lap Band forum? I don't know if this question came from the RNY or Lap Band forum, but post over at the Band forum and you will get some good feedback from many who have probably walked in your shoes. It will be fine. Martha in Michigan

I noticed you had lapband and you will not get dumping with lapband....it was probably a mistake to get lapband if you cannot control your cravings. RNY would have been better for you because your cravings and appetitie disappear due to the nature of the surgery. I assume you have no follow up with your doctor if you haven't lost anything in 2 weeks. You need support and guidance from a nutritionist. Call the doctor who did the lapband and ask about following a program - you will not succeed with your weightloss if you don'.t Good luck.

I feel hungry too I'm 3 weeks post op. It will be much better when you get your fill which should be around 6 weeks. So, hang in there it gets better.

I am nearly 5 wks lap band post op and lost about 17 lbs and not yet have 1st fill. I think you should be careful what you eat. I only eat fish and chopped pork and no sweetened juice at all, 100% pure water. I still wonder I don't do great my started weight is 260 lbs and now 242 lbs. You can do it just be aware when you eat. Good Luck and keep me inform about your progress.

Hi! Do you have a local support group you can attend? Support would be my greatest suggestion. Everything else has already been said. It will get better after you have had a few fills and find your "sweet spot". Hang in there!

Why are you sabbotaging yourself with the cheating already? Not a good sign for the future either! Listen, no matter what surgery you had, it's ultimately YOU who decides if it's going to work or not. FOLLOW the simple instructions and it will. Can you "cheat" afterwards? of course! Just get near the goal first ok? sheesh! Then people say OH I Had that done and it didn't work!!! No, you didn't work...you were blessed with the surgery and when you didn't shrink overnight you went right into old habbits of pushing the limit and far beyond.

Wow, do you feel ganged up on or what? It seems like others are coming down on you a little hard, hey? I remember what it was like not to be able to eat after surgery and this was probably the hardest part. I remember the head hunger and that cravings and the just wanting something sweet or salty and the regret of it all. I mean please, how many of us have not cheated, c'mon? At 2 weeks out, it is pretty hard. I had a RNY but a good friend of mine had the lap band. Both of us had food restrictions after surgery and with both surgeries, it is a big adjustment. Remember that with the band it should be slow and steady. My question is are you eating enough? If you don't eat enough, your body will go into starvation mode and hold onto what it has, no matter what plan your following or surgery that you had. My friend had to wait a month before she could get her band filled. Call your doctor and get CLEAR info and don't feel stupid for calling because that is what they're there for. Also, call your nutritionist but I wouldn't mention the candy or the ice cream because, obviously, she will tell you not to eat it..and you know that already. But that is just my opinion. Stay positive! It will get better! You will have no regrets once you get the hang of it all! My friend is doing great now and so am I. It will come off! Best Wishes....

Lap band is very different that a gastric bypass. You are back on regular food sooner and no you will not loose the amount of weight seen with bypass. Right now you are to worry about letting yourself heal. Early on is very frustrating. I had my lband placed 4/19. I lost only 4 lbs in the next 6 weeks til I got my fill. My 1st fill was 1 cc & I can barely tell a difference. I just keep reminding myself I did not gain in a day & will not loose in a day. It takes time to heal and get the right adjustment/fill. You ar doing okay. Donna
