this is a question you should ask your DOCTOR... not a bunch of regular people

Think positive -- all will go well. Most people I know that have had the surgery where in the longest 2-3 days -- everybody is different and it depends on how your system responds to liquids.

Hello Dawn, Your surgeon will definitely be able to answer this for you but if you are just polling the members of this site in general, I can tell you that I had Lap RNY and was in the hospital for 2 days. I hope this helps and I wish you the best. Tiffany

Hi Dawn, I can only speak for myself but I went in on Monday morning and was home by Wednesday afternoon. (Lap RNY). I believe this is pretty much the norm. Good luck. Jean

Hey Dawn... the norm for the lap procedure is 2 days. You will have the surgery say on Monday, and will be out by Wednesday afternoon, or evening. Hint, take a dose of pain medication before leaving for the ride home. It makes all of the bumps in the road alot more tolerable. I wish I had done it.... good luck to you.

If you are having it done open maybe 4 days otherwise only 3 days. I had it on the 29th of Sept & was out on Oct 1st w/no complications. Much luck! Phyllis S.

Every doctor has different views- I went in on Tuesday and was home by Thursday afternoon- however the local Army hospital places all patients in ICU for 24-48 hours and then hold them in the hospital for the rest of the week- as a nurse I think some of it depends on whether you are having a specialist do the surgery or a general surgeon.

I had lap RNY on a Wed at 7:30 a.m. left the hospital on Thurs at 5:30 p.m. It helps if you get up and walking as soon as you can and then walk as much as you can. On Wed I kept up with pain meds on Thurs. I had one Vicodin at 3:00 in the afternoon and that was the last one. But I have a pretty high tollerance for pain.

I went in on Thursday for a 7:30am surgery and left at noon the next day. My doctor puts all his patients in ICU and I guess they only allow us one night, besides he says you need to sleep and cannot sleep in the hospital. I was happy to be home in my own bed!

I am sorry that Dale Henderson was so harsh with you, he has a small problem with that. Anyways, I think that the average now for lap RNY is 1 day and 2 days for open RNY but all doctors have their own protocol so it is best you check with him or her. Good luck. Chris

I had LAP RNY surgery at 8:30am and was home the following day by 2pm....so a little over 24 hrs. The night following surgery I still had my fluid IV in my arm, but they had taken out my catheter so the need to use the bathroom was an hourly event. I got tired of beeping the nurse to help take off my leg compression and to help get in the bathroom....so I just started walking....round and round my floor....it was probably the best thing for me. Getting up walking early is very important...and really does make a huge difference in how you feel....not only helps prevent blood clots..but also gets that gas moving. Good luck to you....you will do great!!
