Question:
I am 2 months post-op and my hair is falling out. I was told to up

my protein but I can't because I can't eat much. Is there a protein pill that I can take? I've tried the powder but it is nasty.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on May 23, 2006)

Try to take Biotin. You can get the vitamins and the shampoos at GNC for about $20. Or you can take flax seed pills. I'm a year and a week out of surgery and my hair just stopped falling out, but the Biotin and flax seed helped slow the loss a lot!! Becky

Tikeya, I am 2 weeks out and already having issues with protein. Can only drink about 3 ounces and then I don't like it anymore. Another person told me about a flavorless, colorless protein powder we can get to mix into anything we want. I think she said she gets it at Trader Joe's, but I don't have one nearby. Might be something to look into, I know I am going to. Sarah

Try looking on Ebay - or browse for Trader Joes. You'll surely find it virtually. In fact, I think I'll take my own advice. I'm pre-op so I can have it on hand ahead of time. Good luck, Linda

I totally agree about the Biotin. I am pre-op but have already suffered from hair-loss due to diabetes and medications I am taking. This is a touchy issue for me because I always had long thick hair :(. Anyhow..along with the biotin,I am also using Main and Tail, because it is overflowing with proteins and neccessary acids. I am already getting in thicker, softer, and healthier hair than I have had in years! Plus, the Mane and Tail Shampoo can be found in the pet section of your local Wal-Mart, and it's only $5, compared to $20-$30 for those more expensive substitutes. We already put enough money out for doctors visits and protein shakes! Hope this helps! Take care and God Bless you Wl Journey! Shannon

which protein powder have you tried and how did you make it up? you should be able to find one that is NOT nasty as made with water. I LOVE my shakes, all some vairation of chocolate, but there are literally hundreds of choices. I'm thinking you got something nasty and think they're all like that. Buy samples and find the one(s) you love.

Hi Tikeya, Try www.unjury.com. I am not affiliated with Unjury in any way, but I can't stand the taste of protein drinks, bars, or anything like it, but I sent for samples of several and unjury is the only one that doesn't have that protein taste. I use the chocolate and unflavored together (1/2 & 1/2). The chocolate is a little sweet for me. I blend them with skim milk in the blender. I am lactose intolerant and was before surgery as well. The whey proteins cause the intolerance, but the unjury is whey isolate which has the lactose removed. I mix it with lactose free milk and I do fine. It is a treat for me. Like chocolate milk. They have all flavors. Check out the website and order some samples and try them. Hope this helps. Christ's peace, Connie aka Teal Rose

There is some stuff that tastes like cough syrup at GNC, but you only need to take it like you would cough syrup. It is punch flavor so it says, but anyway what I did was take it in a shot glass cause that gave you enough to be one serving. Cannot remember the name right now. hope this helps.

Hi, I am almost 4 months post op and I have been eating steak and chicken since 2 months post op. As well as every type o f fish (not fried) Sushi, ox tails, curry goat rice and peas. Don't get me wrong. I waste a lot of food. However most of my meals are during business meetings. I too have notice that my hair is shedding. My nutritionis has recommended Biotin. I have not taken it. I go to a hair stylist weekly and for the most part I let her take care of my hair the shedding is one of the side effects so it is what it is. There is also a protien liquid you can purchase which packs 25grams. I tried this my second week but it did not taste good.

For protein try Pro-Stat, the amount per serving is 2 table spoons and it has 15 gm of protein per serving, if you take 2 serving per day at least that will give you 30 of the 60 grams you need for the day, you can always have 3 servings per day and get 45 grams per day, that shoudl be more that enough protein for the day and it may help with the protein intake, It is a little pricey for $28.00 for a 16 day supply but I found it helps me now since I can't eat much.

Hi I'm 10 months out and I too experienced hair loss from month 3-7 months. It wasn't the lack of protein because I consume at least 70 grams everyday via protein shakes. this is in addition to all the protein I consumed from the foods I ate. So be aware even if you get all the protein you can in you may still lose your hair. I took biotin everyday...3000 mcg.(not mg. be sure you get the right amount in.) and used the Nioxin Shampoo and conditioner. I was the only one really to notice the hair loss but it was enough to stress me out. I also went to the salon and got occasional hair conditioning treatments because i found that my hair was very dry and needed help. Know that even if you get all your protein and then some in you may lose your hair, it's partly due to the lack of nutrients being absorbed by our bodies now that we have had our digestive systems altered., also hair loss is a side effect of this surgery and what I have been told surgery itself in general. A lot of women I know have loss hair after giving birth...so it is a process that our bodies have to go through. Just remember hair grows back and before you know it you won't even remember losing it. As for protein I drink mostly Worldwide Pure Protein, 35 grams per can( it's premade) they are okay I just tell myself I need the protein and drink it down with out really tasting it! A girl has to do what a girl has to do to survive! Good Luck.

Tikeya, I am 12 months post op. I lost hair also. It started about 3 months and stopped at 6 or 7. I got pretty thin on top but it wasn't all that bad. My support group recommended that I take Biotin. It is a natural supplement that is available at Walmart or any pharmacy where vitamins are sold. I tool 2 a day as they recommended and it did help. This too shall pass. As far as your eating goes it will improve. Just try to get more protein than anything else. I can lead you to a protein shake that I like that will give you 35 grams in one drink. If you want to I can send you the info. Good luck. This has been the greatest experience of my life. I am down 152 lbs. I went from a size 28 to a 6/8. I am just thrilled. I know you probably are having times when you don't feel well but this will go away and the end far outweighs the means. Trac
