Question:
Constipation? What can I take that is safe and not to harsh?

I really do try to keep enough fiber in my diet, but when it is around that time of the month I really have a hard time with my bowls getting backed up:{.    — maria_sola (posted on April 1, 2006)

There is Senna, which is a gentle type of laxative, or I have used Colace, which softens the bowels. Both are easy on the stomach and intestines. Shelly

Hi Maria~Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone with the constipation. I asked my surgeon (after surgery) and he recommended that I take Phillip's Milk of Magnesia. I had previously tried Metamucil (which I used successfully prior to surgery), and it didn't work - in fact, made the problem worse. Now, I take Phillip's maybe every other day, or sometimes every third day, and it works without cramping and is not harsh on the system. If I have waited too long to take it, I will take a double dose (per doctor instructions), and in four hours, am back to normal. I find that the cherry flavor is a bit easier to take than the regular, and also keeping it in the fridge makes it a bit more palatable. Good luck! Dorrie

Wow, I can't believe you have the same issue as I do when it comes to that time of the month. It can be VERY painful at times... I take a generic stool softener daily to help avoid the problem and it seems to work. The name brand stool softeners are much too expensive for me, but the generic ones do a wonderful job. I may not have helped you out much, but at least you know someone has the same issue as you! Good luck!

I like the Medimusil biscuits. I get them at Walmart for around $5 a box. There are two flavors that I know of. I can't take anything harse. These work great and taste fair.

I have found that if I up my water intake and walk every day for atleast 30 minutes, that help me get moving regularly, if I miss a day of walking I get constipated!

I just recently had to deal with that issue myself, I am so glad to know that I am not the only one dealing with it, I feel less crazy now. But my Dr. told me to try Benefiber; they have a chewable tablet that comes in Orange Creme flavor, that isn't too bad. The first day I chewed one every time I ate, and it worked wonders. Now I take one in the morning and one before I go to bed. If I feel things aren't moving smoothly enough I will take one during the day. Prior to surgery I never had a problem, so this was all new to me. My Dr. also told me that if I felt things were not moving fast enough I could try Dulcolax suppositories. Fortunately I did not need those. Good luck! Love Lori

Sugar free candy with sorbitol or malitrol. Unsure of spelling:( Dried apricots, I have found adding a little fat helps tremendously. like butter. Of course follow your surgeons orders it depends on how far out you are.

Personally, I like Benefiber - mix it into my morning tea. It has no taste and is natural. Also, walking seems to help.

When I had this problem before, I didn't want to take anything that could make me dependent upon it. I found glycerin suppositories worked within 10-15 minutes after using. Regards~

I'm just shy of 10 months out.. I sometimes get constipated still.. But if it's been 5 days since I had a BM, I will take stool softeners for a couple of days until I have one.. But usually I have a BM Naturally. It's been a good couple of months since I had to use a stool softener. I was impacted of stool once and I never ever want to have that feeling ever again!
