I am pre-op but here are the surgeon/nutritionist recommendations:
Clear liquids in the hospital
Full liquid until week 3 (protein shakes)
Pureed food weeks 3-6
High protein, low fiber from week 6
One week after surgery one Centrum Silver tablet (broken in half) in the
morning and one Centrum Regular (broken in half) in the evening - at 6
weeks you may take the whole tablet.
Calcium Citrate 1200-1500 mg every day, Vitamin B-12; 500mcg subligual
every day
Good luck!

An excellent program; Kaiser: This is what they tell us, start your
vitamins before surgery, so you will be ready physically for what the
surgery will do to your body. WLS causes your body to be mal-absorption,
this is permanent. Your body may or may not have a lesser amount of
nutrients even now, but will later, so get your vitamins for bariatric
people plus Calcium citrate and B12 will be a part of your world. You will
under go blood tests before and after and monthly until who knows when,
just to make sure your body is not deficient. As far as protein goes, some
start before surgery. After surgery it is a must, since protein is what
keeps your body from eating itself. Simple carbohydrates keep you from
loosing the fat, and Proteins and complex carbohydrate will be what you
eat.

Hi Hailey, I started my vitamins a few months before my surgery and
continued as soon as I got home 3 days post op. I have never stopped
since. At first the vitamins filled me up completely! Now (7 months post
op) I don't get full from them but I make sure I take them in the a.m. Get
into the habit now. Like a previous poster stated, it is a part of your
life after WLS so get used to doing it now and MAKE it a habit : ) I
started shakes the second/ third week post op. My best wishes for a safe
surgery and fast recovery Hailey. This is the best thing (WLS) I have done
for myself and feel wonderful. Get into healthy habits right after your
surgery like walking, taking vitamins, protein first and drinking water.

I was instructed to start vitamins and protein shakes as soon as I got
home. It's easiest to take the chewable vitamins until you can handle the
pill form. Good luck.

Be careful with broken in half tablets cause I am just over 5 months out
and have to take my calcium broken in half and it sometimes goes down rough
Just my 2 cents Pam,Good luck in your journey :o)

They start you on the vitamins and protein while in the hospital (normally)
and your individual surgeon/dietician will give you their instructions for
surgery afterwards.

My doc wanted us to start protein shakes at a week post. At 5 days post, I
was feeling light headed and weak. He okayed me to start them then, and I
felt like I came back to life. I'm 6 years out now, and have never gone a
day without a minimum of 4 shakes. At least I know I'm getting my protein
that way, and I feel it if I try to get by on less. Just my personal
experience. Regards~
