Question:
I need help on what to eat and drink post-op for the 1st 4 weeks.

I am having the DS surgery on 11/30 and I really don't know what I should eat. My dietitian did not clearly explain what I should eat. I know soup, jello but what kind? Please advise me!    — TANGIE B. (posted on November 27, 2000)

Hi Tangie, I had (open) bpd/ds on the 12th of October..so I'm already praying for you sweetie! Okay, you can have sugar free jello...and sugar free pudding (Jello brand for both is great!)...use skim milk in the pudding and blend it up...it's smoother using the blender. Also, sugar free popcicles...PEDIAPOPS! They only have 6 calories...and they add electrolytes (good stuff for a healing body). They cost about $6. a box and you have to find them in the baby section. They come in 4 flavors (and they are the kind that you push up, okay?). Also, bake some chicken, blend it or pull it apart in teeny tiny pieces, add a little cream of chicken soup (using water or nothing at all) heated up over it...yummy! hmmm...oh yeah, Carnation Instant Breakfast...sugarfree! I know the chocolate and vanilla are both great! My doctor also says Crystal Light is fine, but...I'd rather stick with water. Do not try to eat breads that get gummy...ouch! Do not try and eat starchy veggies (lima beans, corn, etc..) at first, wait until after your first checkup at least! :-) Try and get your protein in first...chicken, fish, and the CIB. Do not try and eat beef (it's a little harder to digest, okay?). Stay away from sugar, caffeine, and carbonated beverages! I am... This thursday will be my 6 week postop...and I'm down today 39 pounds. You can also have tuna..but, I did cheat a little and had just a dab of mayo/must with mine. I couldn't help it. Take baby steps...remember this is your new birthday...and don't worry too much about what you are eating as much as how you feel. Make sure you take your vitamin everyday..very important! I took "bugs bunny" for 3 weeks, then I was able to move on the adult prenatal presription vitamin...cool, huh? Oh yeah, if you get bored with what you are eating, remember it will move on gradually to a better selection...okay? And, I'm here for you if you need to talk...God bless [email protected]
