Question:
has anyone ever had RNY and gained back all the weight ?
I'm also curious to which surgery is the most dangerous to your health the DS or the RNY and also will you get use to the changes that has to be made? ex. no suger for RNY. — TANGIE B. (posted on August 25, 2000)

I agree with Barb it's not an issue of DS vs RNY there is not a LICK
of difference between the two in weight loss and weight regain..(weight
regain can happen in both if you abuse the process) It depends on YOU..
Your determination & your desire to use the tool that WLS gave to
you.. Stick with the lessons you learned in the way you eat. I
"VERY MUCH" love that I can eat anything I want in my small
portions. (which that alone keeps me in line) I have had Fobi pouch
(divided) procedure so that I'm very secure in the knowledge that as long
as I adhere to my portion size (which is easy to do) then my pouch won't
stretch.. It's very easy to stay within my calorie limitation with the
pouch.. The larger stomach is what got me to 367 pounds in the first
place.. So I'm very happy with my pouch and would not trade it in for a
second.. By the way I talked with Georgeann Mallory, Executive Director of
http://www.asbs.org (ASBS) the other day.. And she told me the National
Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference will be in the Spring
of 2001.. The last Consensus statement was March 25-27, 1991.. So this has
been much needed for a very long time. She expects the report will most
likely take a few months getting out to the public. So maybe summer 2001.

Tangie, I have written 10 DS surgeons lately, with 8 responding. I was
asking questions about revising my RNY to the DS, mostly for better iron
absorbtion, and more weightloss. ALL of the docs who responded said that
the RNY and DS has the same physiological effects afterwards. ALL said
that neither has better iron absorbtion, so I feel that they are
equal....in ways. Some people who have had the RNY have problems with
sugar....I do not, never have. Some have problems with food getting
stuck...I do not, never have. Some have problems with the "dumping
syndrome:...I do not, never have. I have had a problem with gaining my
weight back, but every DS surgeon I have corresponded with suggests
shortening the common tract, not revising me to the DS. I guess it depends
on YOU, and YOUR doc. I can't really answer questions as to how your life
will be after WLS...everyone is different. I do wish you the best of luck
with which ever WLS you chose. I will be glad to answer questions if you
want to email me.
