Question:
What to eat one month out from RNY.
I am 4 weeks out from RNY and don't know what to eat. Most day's I don't eat at all just not hungry but I do make sure that I get all my protein in for the day. I would just like some ideas of what others are eating one month out. Thank You! — jammx4 (posted on July 2, 2010)

One month out I was eating 1/4 cup of things like Greek yogurt, ground
steak/turkey/chicken' cottage cheese. Everything I did eat I added my
unflavored protein to bump the protein level up. I also drank my protein
drinks throughout the day for both hydration and snacks.
Good luck and God bless.

Please believe me when I write what I am about to write, it is not a
reflection on you, but it is on the Dr you choose for your operation.
Didn't your Dr give you a book telling you what to eat or not to eat? To
me, this is criminal, here you took the biggest plunge of your life,
choosing this operation, why wouldn't the Dr give you a complete guide on
what to eat???
I am quite leery to tell you what you should or should not be eating a
month out.
Well, one month out, for ME, I was allowed only pureed protein, shakes,
beans, cheese, SF jello, Crystal Light, Greek yogurt, and eggs. I do not
tolerate protein, so I am up the creek without a paddle, and my
nutritionist is working with me, because I can't do a lot of protein.
Plus, I was only allowed to eat protein, until I lost 75% of my weight. My
Dr is one of the best when it comes to bariatric surgery. He has a very
comprehensive program right at the Cleveland Clinic.
I applaud you for coming in the OH and asking, you are doing the right
thing, plus I am glad you are eating your protein, most important.
Here is a really great site for you, this gal is phenomenal.

I am 6 weeks out and I am eating around 6 small meals a day. Everything is
around a 1/4 cup. Example: Breakfast two mini whole wheat pitas (Trader
Joes) with either 1/4 egg whites or 1/2TBS peanut butter. Lunch either
1/4-1/2C of chicken or shrimp salad. Dinner really varies. But I always
add some extra powder protein to just about everything.

At 4 weeks out I was still just drinking all my protein. I had two Pure
Protein shakes (breakfast and dinner) which are 35g of protein each and
during the day I drank Pro-15ti Peach Mango drinks. (15g of protein each).
I've never had a problem getting the protein in, but was slow to be able to
eat. (not hungry and when I had anything of substance, I vomited). My dr
told me some stomachs take longer to relearn how to "push" the
food down and the symptoms I was describing indicated just that. I'm now
just over 6 months out and can eat soft things (soup, applesauce, well
cooked veggies etc) but things I cannot tolerate are any meat or eggs !
You have to find out how you feel and how your body reacts to food. Greek
Yogurt seems to be a great idea, but it's something that I couldn't handle
with the thick consistency ! Best of luck !

The best thing right now is to stay on liquids for little while longer. It
is best for your pouch, because it is still swollen, tender and sore.
Putting food in it isn't bad, but the healing process is better. Baby your
pouch for at least one more month on thick liquids and liquids. Since
you're not hungry, it is hard to get your liquids in, but remember protein
isn't the only liquid you need. You can have s/f popsicles, broth, s/f
jello (it's a liquid). Anything you can see through is a good choice right
now. Tea with Splenda, soup. Thick liquids are like split pea soup. I
put all my soups in the blender, and most of my food (pureed stage) in the
blender, just to make sure I got all the chunks out, so it doesn't
interfere with healing. All doctors have different food plans but I think
the longer you can stay on phase one and two, the better you will heal. If
you have any questions, please free to email me. I am 4.5 yrs post op RNY
and have 100 lbs.

at four weeks I was liquid only and then got to introduce semi soft, like
cottage cheese, yogurt etc. I am now ten weeks out and still can't do much
protein. Meat just gets tossed up although today I got some ham to stay
down. Fruits are my best friend right now, my doctor won't like it but I
have to eat something and meat just does not go down well.
