I was told no caffeine because it is a diuretic and can help dehydrate you. But others on this forum have said their doctors have told them that they can have a cup or two of coffee IF (and ONLY IF) they drank twice that amount of water or other decaffeinated liquid to replace the amount that you lose.

I was told not to drink any caffeine, as it blocks the absorbption of Iron in our bodies. When our bodies are already depleted of much needed vitamins and nutrients, I'm not taking the chance on drinking anything caffeinated. I haven't had coffee in over 4 months, and sure there are times I miss it, but I won't risk the chance. I've come so far and worked too hard to start breaking the rules. You can survive without caffeine though. Get your "high" from other sources now, like having "WOW" moments like buying a new belt, or having someone say, "wow, you look incredible," or from serious exercise everyday. Same endorphin reactions come from those moments as you get from caffeine. Good luck to you!

I do drink coffee in the morning, but it was about 3 months post surgery before I started back. I actually lost my taste for coffee at first because i was concentrating so much to get the liquid and protien in. Now I am 15 months out and have only 2 cups in the morning (down from 6 pre surgery). BUT, I increase my water in the morning too so for each cup of coffee I have 2 cups of water.

I drink caffeine but I do make sure that the caffeinated beverages do not count in my 64oz of liquids for the day. I just make sure that I drink other things as well... I have given up most sugars and fried foods and everything else that I used to love so I am not giving up my coffee.....

I've been allowed decaf coffee from the git-go, and was told I could have one cup of caffeinated coffee at 3 weeks. But I've only done that twice. I'm sticking with decaf - I'm used to it now.

I just met with my bariatric dietician on 2/11 and was told no caffeine for 3 - 4 months post op because it is a diuretic and you need to keep yourself hydrated. I am a coffee drinker and she advised me to start cutting down now to avoid the headaches of withdrawal if I would do it cold turkey.
