Question:
I haven't had a bowel movement since Dec 7 which was the day before my surgery.

What can I expect?    — buceriasjean (posted on January 5, 2010)

I still have problems with bowel movements, and I'm 10 months out! After trying everything they recommended - from fiber to Metamucil, to Miralax, to Colace, to Ducolax - I found that what works best for me is a tea called Smooth Move. It's from "Traditional Medicinals" and I have found it both in health food stores and major supermarkets. It comes in regular and chocolate flavor. I like to buy the chocolate flavor, and brew a large cup with a teabag of the Smooth Move and a teabag of Mint Magic from Celestial Seasonings. Then I've got a very pleasant chocolate mint-tasting tea, and I add a packet of Splenda and it's a great treat that keeps me regular. I try to drink it once a day. If I miss a day or two, I sure know it. My registered dietician says that using it to stay regular is okay, since it's all natural. For me, it usually works within 12 hours.

I use benefiber 3 x a day and I also take miralax every night. They both come in an unflavored powdered form that you can mix with anything. If all else fails you could eat something that will kick in your dumping syndrome and I guarantee you will have a bowl movement!

I would absolutely consult your doctor after a month! You could have a kink in your bowel, or some other bowel obstruction. You may not, but I would be on the safe side and have this checked out immediately! Concerned here!

i also was having this problem. my surg was 12-15-09 and the only thing that would help me, sounds crazy, but i put a teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot tea and within a few hours, i went. i asked my doc about it and he said as long as i dont use alot of honey that was fine. it worked and didnt have to taste bad lol

Hi you really need to consult your doc a month is to long not to have any bowel movement the suggestions people have given are all very good however a period of 1 month without a movement is far to long and most likely will call for medical intervention.

I agree with the other posters contact your surgeon. I went a week after surgery. I haven't experienced any issues ever since. Best to you.
