Question:
Hiccups!!!
Anyone else have hiccups? I'm p/o RNY 4 days, and I've had hiccups 5 or 6 times/day every day! They're driving me nuts! Anybody able to tell me they've been through the same thing, and they'll go away? Thanks!!! — emily2009 (posted on January 3, 2010)

I'm 5 months post RNY and I wish I could tell you they will go away. I
still get the hiccups, usually it's a signal for me that I'm eating to fast
and getting full. At 4 days you are still a fresh p/o everything is
tender, swelling is just starting to subside,so the hiccups may just be
temporary. Hang in there. Sip! Sip! Sip!

I get the hiccups after I've eaten...for me, it means I'm full...I either
hiccup or sneeze...or sometimes both.

I would call your doc. When I had my surgery one of the things to notify
the doctor about was getting the hiccups so soon after surgery. I guess it
can be an indicator of some sort of complication. Not sure what it is, but
that was on the list of "call your surgeon right away if you
have". Farther out it is ok, but not so soon after surgery. Good
luck.

If this keeps up be sure to call your doctor. We have a friend who had
the hiccups like this and it was a symptom of very serious internal
problems. Don't wait. Call your Doc. Good luck.

I am 12 days p/o rny and on day 10, I got the hiccups. They really hurt.
I tried sipping water, and that didn't help and we know a spoonful of sugar
is out of the question. Ultimately, I made them go away by drinking from
the wrong side of the glass (bend over and drink from the farthest side of
the glass so that your chin is kind of in the glass). It made them go
away, but my stomach felt funny and I didn't feel quite right. My clinic
never mentioned anything about hiccups, but sounds like you don't have a
one-time event happening. I'm with everybody else, call your doc! Hiccups
when too full, eh? I haven't heard that one yet. I'm trying to remember
what I ate that day. And sneezing too? What would cause that?
Take care,
Kristin

My surgeon had said specifically if I got the hiccups more than 1 or 2
times to definitely call them right away, it was high on the list of things
that said to notify them right away if it was happening. Not sure what it
would mean, but he wanted to know if that was happening.

I had LapBand in Nov., 2008, and I still get the hiccups when I have eaten
enough. Usually if I continue to eat, I throw up! It's just a sign (for
me, anyway) that I'm full.

That subject came up in my support group last week and the general answer
was some get them as a warning sign when they are full.
