Question:
Can you ever drink liquids same time while eating?

I am 10 months post lap RNY, and am wondering if I will be able to ever drink liquids while eating or is it never going to happen, and liquids will always have to be separately taken from foods.    — marwilldoit (posted on December 28, 2009)

You should always for the rest of your at least wait 30 minutes after eating before drinking with RNY or 60 minutes if you have a lapband. Fluids can push food through your pouch making you hungrier quicker, and it can also cause your stoma to stretch. Not to mention, it can also cause you to vomit if the food doesn't push through quick enough. It's not a good idea for any form of weight loss surgery to drink with your meals, ever.

I would have to say Yes, but only because I am 4 yrs post op. I only have a little to drink with my meals but I do sip a little here and there while eating. I try not to drink milk with a meal though, that is pretty filling. As time goes by, you will know what you can and can't do. Not everyone will be able to. So I would say, based on how well you have done with your surgery as far as healing, following dr. post op directions, is going to tell you that. You are pretty early still from post op, I wouldn't rush it though. This is a tool and we need to learn to be patient. If you do try it, it might make you hurt in your pouch, so be patient. Hope this helps.

I have always taken 2-3 sips while eating, with no problems, I just don't guzzle. The idea is to keep the food in your pouch as long as possible for satiety. After a while this becomes habit, and you don't want to drink more, as you will feel too full before finishing your meal.

I would say you shouldn't be able to "drink" with your pouch, I have never tried that, but I do take tiny sips. I can't get the food down otherwise. But "sips" are a lot different than drinks. I am a year and a half out from RNY. Good luck in your journey.

I was told to never drink with a meal. I'm almost 18 months out and I wait about 30 minutes after eating to drink. It is painful for me to drink too soon. There have been a few times when I ate something really hot or something that made me really thirsty so I would take a very small sips, but drinking with a meal is not recommended.

I know this is a tough one, but I have to tell you this is one of the major factors in my weight gain since my surgery in 2003. Granted...only gaining 30 lbs before taking control, I am back on track and DO NOT drink with my meals. I drink all day and follow the liquid restrictions faithfully. I stay fuller longer and my pouch works the way it is supposed to. I do however keep water with me all the time...in case you get choked up while eating you will want to have something to drink in case you need it. I am pretty sure the only exception to the rule is alcohol...but that should be limited too :-) good luck!!
