Question:
not losing enough??
I had WLS (RNY) July 8, 2009. I have only lost 28 pounds. I go to the gym daily, walk atleast a mile in the pool and work my arms with pool weights while walking. I also do atleast a mile on the treadmill at 3.4 mph. The weight just doesn't want to leave...... — Carla C. (posted on August 14, 2009)

I had RNY the day before you did and have lost 24 lbs. since. I did however
lose 20 lbs. during the 2 week pre liquid diet. Hang in there! It sounds
like you are doing everything right. By this time next year we should both
be looking amazing.

The nurse at my doctor's office told me that in the beginning you can
expect to lose 10-15 pounds per month. I had surgery 3-2-09 and have only
lost 65 pounds. In the beginning I lost fast, for past month hardly
anything. I don't exercise like I should or even walk more than work cause
my fibromyalgia has benn flaring up. Some people lose very fast, but your
loss is normal. And if you are exercising alot, you may be gaining muscle
mass, which weighs more than fat.Keep up the good work and good luck. JoAnn

You also might be losing inches and not pounds. So they aren't as
noticable as the numbers on the scale. Take your measurements and keep
track. Everyone says "Oh I have ONLY lost xxx of weight". If
you were to take several bags of potatoes and hold them, that is how much
28 lbs of weight feels like and you were carrying it. So, 28 lbs is great.
People lose weight at different rates due to their metabolism so hang in
there and measure yourself. Those inches are disappearing, you just don't
see them. best wishes.

I am having the same issues:. I had RNy on June 22, I lost 15 pre op, only
15 month one and only 9 this month. I am working out EVERy day, 35-45 min
on the eliptical machine (2.5-3mi) and 15-30 on weights and sit ups, etc.
Recording food carefully, protein at 40g or so and calories at 500-700 a
day! frustrated and don't know what to try.

i know that it's frustrating. i was VERY impatient. i'm seven months out as
of yesterday, but i can remember the days and weeks right after surgery
very clearly. i was walking a lot, eating/drinking what i was supposed to.
my weight came off pretty quickly at first, but it's slowed down a LOT over
the past few months. just keep doing what you're doing. mine was fast in
the beginning, like i said, but is so much slower now, so i think we all
just lose it differently. i make the mistake of comparing myself to other
people's weight loss, or comparing my weight loss to what i WANT it to be,
or what i THINK it should be. it really sounds like you're doing an amazing
job. i agree that you're probably adding on muscle mass at this point,
which absolutely weighs more than fat. maybe take your measurements now, if
you haven't already, and take a look at that too. i regret not having done
measurements in the beginning.
don't be too hard on yourself. you really sound like you're doing GREAT.
but believe me, i relate to the impatience and frustration...it just takes
time. i have lost 130, and have 80 more to go. i had hoped to be to my goal
weight by one year, but it's clear that's not going to happen now. so. i'm
trying to take my own advice. we really need to just do what we're supposed
to do, and the weight WILL come off.
good luck. i'm impressed with your exercise! excellent work.

OMG...you're doing great on your weight loss plan. Stop beating yourself
up. Think of it this way: When was the last time you lost 28 lbs. in only
5 weeks? Keep up the fantastic work you are doing and visualize those sleek
muscles you are forming below the soon-to-be-rid-of padding!

Hi Carla, I had my proximal bypass in 2007, I started at about 250, just a
week or so ago I finally hit my goal of 135. then two days later
130.5...you will hit plateau's, last anywhere from a day to weeks then you
look and its gone,(the weight on the scale) in between when it seems your
not losing, its comeing off in inches not on the scale..
It takes patience, I personally very seldom touch the scales unless
someone like the doc or family memeber ask me to..Stick to your diet, and
exercise and just enjoy your life, then say in a couple of month step on
the scale and see if that works for you, worries and fears are what had me
gaining my weight in the first place now I try very hard not to think about
worrying..Make sense?..Hugs, good luck and keep up the good work..Gabby

I agree with the other posts regarding "only losing xxx amount of
weight in xxx amount of time. From experience... this thinking pattern will
make you miserable. This is not a race to see who can lose the most amount
of weight in the shortest period of time... I was continously beating
myself up, going through that vicious cyle... I had my surgery 10 months
ago, and I have lost a total of 50 pounds! I am 50 pounds lighter !!!!!!!
Yipeee !!!!!
Another thing is since I have lost slowly... I don't have that sunk in look
that people have when they lose weight too quickly.
How many times in the past did you give in on a diet because you didn't
lose weight overnight? I think all of us have thrown in the towel because
we could not see the "quick" results. Take your time...this is a
life time committment. Learn your behaviors, listen to your body, enjoy
being active !!!!!

You lost 28 pound since July 8th that is great. It takes time to lose
weight. Keep up the good work and dont have unrealistic expectations. 28
lbs in a littel over a month is good.
