Question:
Anyone else have sour stomach?
I am 3 weeks post-op after having a DS. I have a constant sour stomach that is driving me crazy! Anyone else with the same problem? Also any hints to get rid of it? Thanks. Sharon — sybil5 (posted on June 24, 2009)

I didn't have that problem right after I had surgery, but I do have it from
time to time now. I take an antacid like zantac (I get the generic brand
and it does say you can take for "sour stomach") and it works for
me. But since you've just had surgery, maybe try Pepto Bismol in the
liquid form. I know it tastes awful, but maybe that new cherry flavor is
better? I've taken the Pepto tablets and they've worked for me also.
I hope this helps you and you get some relief. I know what it's like when
you're stomach is just plain icky. Good luck! :)

I never had sour stomach right after surgery but did a year later. I had
RNY. The doctor gave me Nexium and advised me not to eat right before going
to bed.

I had the RNY, but many of my friends had the DS...and we ALL suffered with
heartburn/sour stomach after surgery. I am 7 years post op and to this
day, I have to take a prescription med EVERY SINGLE day to control it. I
take Protonix 1 40mg tab a day. Hopefully, since you are so new P/O this
will go away...but be prepared if it does not. Make sure you tell your
doctor, so he/she can monitor it. If it doesnt go away...you will more
than likely be placed on over the counter antacid meds first, if those dont
work (like they didnt for me)...then they will prescribe something. Do not
let it go untreated for long term. You can damage your esophogus, and
persistent/chronic heartburn can wear down the lining of the esophogus and
cause esophogeal cancer. That is why it is important to keep track of it,
take something over the counter for acid/heartburn...and follow up with
your doctor!
