Question:
Why can I eat more than 1/4 cup of Food??

I am 25 days post op and can eat more than 1/4 cup of food. I would say I can eat 1 full cup of food without any problem. Is this normal?    — shawnaco (posted on January 15, 2009)

yes it's real normal. The best part is that's all it takes and your full. How do you not love that.

Yes some foods I can eat more of. Others fill me up too fast. When you eat slow your pouch does not over fill. Don't worry. As long as you don't feel stuffed you are eating fine. It is scary at first but the pouch will let you know quickly if you over do. Just go slow and chew.

I checked your profile and you didn't say if you had gastric by pass or Lap Band. It makes a difference

I'm sorry. I had Gastric Bypass Surgery on 12/22/08. It just seems like I'm able to eat way more food than I should be able to. I'm worried I'm stretching my pouch.

Everyone is different. And different foods are different. So for you that is very likely normal. vinnigirl, retired RN

You are normal but I remember thinking the same thing. Wait until you are a year out and you can eat a 4oz steak, a salad and part of a baked potato---you will be pretty surprised and happy!!! Keep up the good work and just eat until you are SATISFIED but not STUFFED. I am sure it takes you longer to eat that cup of food than it did before your surgery huh? Best Wishes!!! Don't worry, you are normal.

Sometimes I can eat more than the 1/4 c I'm allowed, but I try to always measure my food. The first few months are when the fastest weight loss happens and it's best to use the tool. Try to stick to the prescribed amount. Just because you can eat more doesn't mean you have to. ;)

You will always be able to eat more when the food is in liquid or soft form. When you get to eating denser foods (tough meats, etc.), you should expect that you will be able to eat smaller amounts. If you push it (not chewing enough, you may cause damage to the opening (the stoma). Measure, chew, chew, chew and do not drink 30 minutes before or after eating.

We all move along faster or slower than some...I personally think this is a LOT of food for only a month RNY...but here's what I think...I think it could be because you are eating slider foods...Soft, moist foods that "slide" out of your pouch much faster than denser proteins...(cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs regular cheese, cereals, saltines...soups etc) As long as your weight loss is going...DON'T worry! And as you graduate to more denser, drier proteins you will not be able to eat as much and be fuller faster and longer. The goal is to get to denser foods and stay there...So it's probably just because you are eating sliders right now! Don't forget to eventually graduate though!...So many stay on sliders too long because they are easier to digest and more agreeable to your pouch! If you are eating til you feel full or uncomfortable, you need to cut back...otherwise...Just enjoy the journey!
