Question:
I am 6 days post op. I am wondering what is the protein max for women a day?

I drink cib with 1cup of 1% milk and add Eas Protein powder from costco. It makes my protein 43 grams. Then I have soup and cream of wheat once a day. And pudding throughout the day. Am I getting enough or should I double by protien shake. Thanks.    — vickiesee (posted on January 13, 2009)

I do not think there is a limit, but i know my surgeon and dietician say we are to have between 60-80 grams of protien a day. That we need that amoun t to stay healthy and to allow our body to heal properly. So i would say 80 grams then.. hope this helps. .good luck Gail

If you are getting 40-60 grams in since you are only 6 days out. That is excellent. You will be able to take more in as the swelling goes down. I was told 60-80g once I am able to "eat and drink" more.

my nutritionist recommends atleast 70 a day for a woman and 80 for a man, something you may like if you like yogurt, kroger has a yogurt with 80 calories called carb master kroger brand and it has like 12 proteins a cup, strawberry raspberry, vanilla, and peach, they may have more but thats all I seen and it dont taste bad, but if you are only 6 days out, you may want to wait a few weeks to get that kind, only 3 sugars, but it does have like seeds in it, and maybe bites of fruit, and believe me you will need your protein, it makes you feel better, and less hungry, I am 11 months out.

Each surgeon requires that you consume different amounts of protein. I was blessed with having one of the top surgeons in bariatric surgery. He statees that your protein powder not be more than 20 grams. If your protein powder is more than that, you might want to reduce the amount of protein you are putting into your milk or water. 8 oz. of milk equals 7 grams of protein, so your shake would be 27 grams total. I was required to drink 4-5 shakes daily plus 100 oz. of water. Hope this helps. Good luck in your new journey. Joyce

My doctor whom is an Instructor for these surgerys says 60-70 grams for women and no more then 25 per meal as your body can't absorb more then that at a time.

I was told that you want to get as much protein in as possible. My doctor required 100 grams of protein a day. I am two weeks out . I do the cream of wheat, jello, cream of chicken soup and a protein shake using milk instead of water to increase my protein. The larger you are the more protein you should intake.

i was told that over 150 is too much by my nut, but that we only need 60-80 grams a day. Everyone is different and do what the nut tells you. But do remember that our body will only absorb 30 grams at a time. Anything more is wasted. split the shake up if you have to....Hope this helped. hugs, Kim

WOW! You are getting in some protein! Good for you at only 6 days out...You might want to try to spread out those high protein meals to smaller and more spread out...43 g's is a good number but are you absorbing it all? No one knows for certain. Adding a scoop of protein to your hot cereal and a sprinkle or two in your pudding might be a more uniform way of absorbing it all better over the day...Just a suggestion...That's how I did it...anyway...Every meal was at about 20 g's protein...at least 3 times a day or more meals (I personally eat 6 times a day...with 3 main meals)...I eat 80-100 g protein now on average...But at 6 days I was lucky to get in 40 a day..I had no appetite and had to force myself to eat...

Each nut recomends a different amount but after doing some research the average is 60 - 80 grams per day. The one thing to watch for is that you can only digest or absorb aprox 20g at a time. make sure that you spread it out. My nut said to max at 20g every 2 hours.
