Question:
SURGERY ON MONDAY!!! HELP!!!

Hi. I am having gastric bypass on 1/5. I have been doing a protein shake diet for the past 4 weeks that my doctor put me on. I have managed to lose 30 pounds and am very proud of myself. However, I have been constipated and was trying to think of some ways to help loosen my bowels. My mom recommended me eating 1- 4 oz activia yogurt. So i did. It helped a little. My question is, will this be out of my stomache by Monday. M doctor will not operate on a patient if they have food in there stomache. I didnt eat food, just yogurt. Just curious. Thanks.    — jackie L. (posted on January 3, 2009)

The yogurt should be fine. But if you are still constipated try 2oz of prune juice and two oz of Milk of Magnesia (sp?). It should get you moving in no time.

I think it will be out of your system by then. Here's the thing. Next time there's a problem ask the Doc not your Mom. They are in charge of our care. I always run things past my doctor just to be safe. Your are after all in his care right now. Good luck and many congrats on the 30 pound weight loss. That's fantastic. Good luck on Monday too.

It will be out -- you can't have anything to eat after midnight anyway.

Yogurt is food and not the best stool softener. Over the counter things work well as recommended by your surgeon and/or pharmacist. Luckily for you, the yogurt should be gone. Best of luck. Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

Jackie, First, congrats on your 30 pound weight loss. Relax you will be fine. And as some others mentioned; as the doc not mom on this one; unless mom is a doc herself and then it is a double no no. Continue on the diet and follow the pre-surgery instructions exactly. Nothing is your system is a must. Remember after midnight nothing. Eat your protein shakes until then. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

I had to do a bowel prep before surgery which should clean you out if you can wait that long. Good Luck!

Personally I'd be asking the doctor or a nurse at his (or her) clinic for that advice. As a nurse myself and an Optifast graduate, I can tell you that constipation is very common on the shakes cause they have so little fibre. A simple non-addictive fibre laxative (e.g. a psyllium product like Metamucil) taken regularly should help the problem quickly - but I'd still confirm with MD that he/she is ok with that. Cheers and best of luck with your surgery; I follow you a month later on 2/5! /Mike

My doctor recomended Colace for constipation. You should give your surgeon a call rather than take anyone elses addvice. They might have you do a bowel prep for the surgery and that will take care of anything in your system. Mine did. I had to drink some nasty stuff two days before surgery and spent quite a bit of time in the toilet. By the time of my surgery I was completely cleansed. Good luck.

I am five days post op from RNY on 12/30. My doctor told me to drink a full 12 oz bottle of magnisum citrate to clean myself out and believe me before I finish the bottle I was running to the bathroom. I am n 3 weeks liquid after the surgery now and was told to talk milk of magnisum to releive any discomfort of constipation. Hope this helps. I did not have to do the 4 weeks prior to my surgery, just one day before the surgery. They say they ask patients to do this to shrink their liver before the surgery, this surgery is near the liver and the smaller it is the better it is for the surgeon.
