Question:
Why do you need to follow a special diet after an adjustment?
I had an adjustment yesterday (12/17/08). I was told to follow the special diet (1 day - clear liquids, 2days-full liquids, & etc.). Why? What will happen if I proceed as normal? Thanks. — lakia1908 (posted on December 18, 2008)

It is very important to follow the liquid diet after an adjustment mainly
because if your band is tight, food will become lodged in the outlet. You
may also experience some swelling after an adjustment......Liz Carrere, RN,

What I'd like to ask you to think about is why you didn't ask that question
when they told you about the special dietary requirements. Best to get
your info straight from the doctor, and you were there.

The stomach is very sensitive. Any time you have an adjustment, get
something stuck, have to vomit, etc. it really irritates the stma (the
opening to the stomach where the pressure is velt). Thus lioquids for a day
or so because you will not have to work so hard getting the fod in the
stomach or digesting it. Makes sense. Same reason why after your surgery
you were on liquidsl

Because, if you don't, you can get a bad stuck incident and end up needing
an unfill or, even worse, having a band slippage. I recently spent a
weekend in hell, throwing up even water, after eating just a few bites of
New England clam chowder, after my previous fill, two weeks ago. I ended
up getting an emergency unfill the following Monday, after throwing up even
water all weekend. I just got a huge fill today.

As everyone have stated food can and will get struck and that is a painful
and uncomfortable feeling in the world. Special you can get the food to
release but one way and that not a way you really want to go. I learn and I
didn't have a fill I learn to do as the doctor say and if you have
questions ask as though your the reporter and this is a report you are
doing. Notes come in handling later. You live and learn.

When you have a fill, your band gets tighter around the top of your stomach
on the outside. There is usually some swelling associated with this
procedure of your stoma on the inside. You need to do liquids as per
doctor's order to allow the swelling to go down so that you can eat the
chunky, healthy protein that will keep you satisfied. If you don't follow
the diet, you could very possibly get something stuck and have vomiting
which can ultimately lead to band erosion or slippage... neither of which
do you want. I'm a little concerned though, this is a very common
situation with our new lives with our bands and you weren't aware of this?
Your doctor didn't explain your post op life with your band to you prior to
surgery? Are you attending any support groups?
Best of luck,
