Question:
Being approx one month out for surgery, what do I do until then?
I have opted for the vertical gastric sleeve. I am supposed to take in clear liquids starting Oct 27th. What should I do in the mean time. Diet? Exercise? — Linda C. (posted on September 27, 2008)

Congrats on your surgery date! The VSG is awesome! I had mine 16 months
ago. Right now I would suggest a high protein low carb diet. Exercise is
always great. The better shape you're in the better the surgery will go.
Start now trying to retrain your mind by taking very small bites and eat
slowly. Also, I would suggest to start weaning yourself off of caffein and
sodas, if you are addicted. It's much easier to wean yourself off slowly,
than to have to go cold turkey. If you are a coffee drinker, maybe start
doing 1/2 caffeine and 1/2 decaf, and slowly start doing less caffeine and
more decaf every few days. Sodas are horrible for people. Once I was weaned
off of them, I will never be addicted to it again. Let me know if you have
any questions.

I think that is a very good question. I think it is best to ask your
sugeron what he or she wants you to do preop.

My doctor had me cut carbonated drinks and caffeine immediately (although
since you have a month before surgery I would recommend doing the caffeine
slowly). Also, no sugars or carbs such as potatoes, rice, pasta or bread.
Those were the most difficult for me, but it is much easier to start
cutting down before surgery, than have all these changes after surgery all
at once! Also, start doing a protein shake meal replacement for one meal a
day. And, yes, exercise is important. Do as much as you can pre-surgery.
I had my VGS on 9/5/2008, and I love it. My main problem is that I just
don't want to eat any more (or drink!), and have to force myself to get all
my protein and water in. My doctor said it takes a month or two for you to
be able to get it all in - not to worry - just keep working at increasing
it until you can handle it. At 3 weeks out, I am just now able to get the
full 60 grams of protein in - now to increase the fluid intake! I am so
worried about getting dehydrated, but you have to just sip all day long.
Best of luck! I am so excited for you. Be sure to let us know how you are
doing.

Linda, if you are in pretty good health I would strengthen both my legs and
arms prior to surgery. You have amonth to work on it, and I would. I
would also recommend to be sure you are OFF ALL forms of carbonated and
caffinated beverages well ahead of time to give yourself the best start.
These types of beverages cause lapses in weight loss and cause people much
struggle, even though caffine will help give some temporary energy, it
causes many hunger triggers and issues and is really counter productive.
Bump up the water drinking and get your bladder clear and working well.
The two days of liquids prior to surgery for me I drank cranberry juice,
and I think it helped me in recovery and bladder health. Be sure you have
all your questions answered and visit a support group or two if you can.
Don't leave any questions on the table, go prepared to the hospital with
comfort items, blanket, pillow, something of color, cleaning items,
including wet wipes and a handled spoon to clean your own bottom (it is
hard to reach right after surgery:)). I would watch what I eat as well,
but don't go crazy about it. Don't treat every day like it is your last
meal, that is a symptom of a worse problem, so don't fall for that. You
willl eat normal again, just smaller. It is a journey and the journey
takes time. Take care, Patricia P.

RNY Gastric Bypass patients start on liquids immediately after surgery. I
would recommend that you start cutting down on your portions to get used to
it as well as exercising. Starting a good habbit now will help you after
surgery.
