After my surgery I had a bacl ache fpr about a week. It went away after
that. I think its from the surgery and being on your back too long. It will
go away.

I just read your other question in which you haven't gone to the bathroom
in about a week. Some of your back pain or maybe all of it could be from
not moving your bowels. Call your surgeon and see if there is something
you can take. Some have to take stool softeners, others just increase
their water/liquid intake. Each surgeon is different, so give yours a
call. I have a feeling once you are able to go to the bathroom, the
majority of your back pain will go away. Good luck, God bless and welcome
to the losing side!

I am 7 mos. post-op. My back hurt so much after surgery (RNY) that I could
not keep still. At 5 mos. I had my gall bladder removed and that helped
alot of the pain but not THE back pain. It starts when I eat a bigger meal
or harder food like hamberger. I had an endescope on New Year's Eve looking
for an ulcer but nothing was found. I have come to believe that that when
they cut the slot for the new stomache connection it just cut a nerve or
irritated something. I still am pretty uncomfortable at times (at least
once a day) but it is not that horrible severe pain of the first months. I
am hoping it will continue to calm down. I would love to hear from anyone
that had this problem and wish you luck. I found that the hot tub and a
heating pad help. Yours, Christine

I am about 5 months post bypass surgery. I had very bad back pain for about
3 months. It has now gone away with the occasional exception which I have
not been able to connect with any particular action on my part.

I am 6 weeks out of RYN surgery and my lower back absolutely kills me every
day. I drink water and have no problems with constipation. I take Tylenol
which helps some, but would love to know why and relief measures as well.

A week after surgery, I got the horrible pain in my back between my
shoulders. After 2 days it moved to my lower back. It lasted a week. I
could barely sleep and NOBODY at the hospital warned me about this. It is
from the position they put you in during surgery. It will go away. Good
luck.

I'm about 10 months out (lap. RNY) and get daily back aches since my
surgery. It happens if I sit too long, especially in the car (after about
10 minutes of driving) and at work (computer job). I didn't have any back
issues before surgery. My doctor can't offer any explanation. I wish
someone could shed some light on what's going on. I'm not constipated and I
get plenty of liquids and protein. Good luck to you - hope your back
doesn't hurt as long as mine has :)

I just had my Lap RNY on 2/11/08. When I woke up, my back hurt so bad I
couldn't even feel any of the other pain I was supposed to be feeling. The
morphine drip never cut the pain, and a too short hospital bed made the
problem even worse. The nurses and docs had no explanation, only to say
that it could be from all of the gas that they pump into you to do a lap
surgery. I will however say that it immediately disappeared once my bowels
evacuated, so my back problem has been resolved, at least for now. I wish
everyone luck and hope this issue get resolved for all as I truly
understand how painful back pain can be.

Prior to surgery, I had never suffered from back pains, but right after
surgery, my back was killing me. This lasted for the first couple of
months, but even though I am four months post-op, I still experience that
dreaded back pain every now and then. I believe it is an adjustment that
our bodies go thru, as with so many other things, after the WLS.
I can say that the pain that I first experienced after surgery and the
first couple of months afterwards has gone away. I have never had a
problem with bowel movements, so I can't attribute that initial pain to
lack of bowel movements, but as I said, I believe it is your body trying to
adjust to it's new self. I now experience the occassional back pain, but
nothing like what I did right after surgery.
Hope this gives you hope for relief down the road.

I had been experiencing back pain for the first 4 months. The pain was mid
to lower back and lasted for about 6 hours a day. My doctor said it was
the change in the center of gravity due to weight loss. Perhaps that is
what is happening to some of you.
