I would suspect that you may have had a new food yesterday, as opposed to the calcium being the problem. New foods should be tried one day at a time, so you can tell if they bother you. I think it's ok to take the Immodium, but you also may want to eat some low fat string cheese, as that tends to be a binder. I had to go to the emergency room for an injury shortly after my surgery. The doctor stitched the wound, and gave me an antibiotic called Cipro. I took it for 10 days. Then I developed diarrhea, although I'd not tried any new foods. A subsequent trip to the doctor revealed that baritric patients have to be cautious of antibiotics that are prescribed. Cipro cleans all good and bad bacteria in the lower tract. This leaves the bariatric a prime target for diarrhea. A subsequent trip to the doctor, I made this doctor aware I was a bariatric. He prescribed an antibiotic (not Cipro) and I had no after effects from this different antibiotic.

Diarrhea has been a problem for me since day 1. I am 3 1/2 months out now. Was tested for a bacteria - negative. MD thinks I mayhave developed lactose intolerance and has me off all milk products which includes cheese and most of the protein shakes I have. As far as what to take ... he said to take Kaopectate and not immodium. Don't know why.

I also can not drink protein shakes, and coffee gives me diarrhea, so it may not be the calcium, try and eliminate a food until u figure which one causes it.

In the begining I had diarrhea due to the protein shakes. And even now if I have protein shakes I have a tendency to have diarrhea. Late when you get on food you might have constipation. for that I take a colace daily, and two sugar free fiber tablets. you might also try the sugar free fiber tablets, they are chewable, come from wal mart. That will help put some bulk into your bowel. gabluecrab

I had a serious problem with diarrhea about 2 wks ost op, and I tested positive for the C-Diff bacteria. Had to take a medicine to clear it up.

Along with J.R.'s post, I'm preop and had ongoing diarrhea for several months after starting the surgical group's preop diet. The nutritionist thought I may be lactose intolerant and after a several week trial of Lactaid milk and cottage cheese and 2 Lactaid tablets before taking dairy products the diarrhea is gone! A note: I've learned to read labels for dairy products in foods - you'd be surprised how many foods have milk powder in them so you need the tablets for these foods also! Also, my nutritionist told me the only approved (in their practice) protein supplements for lactose intolerant people are Unjury and High Protein Boost.
