Question:
How long do I have to wait to eat after taking my chewable iron supplement?
I took the iron on an empty stomach as indicated but how long do I need to wait before eating breakfast? (hour? more?) — newlife05 (posted on November 18, 2007)

30-60 minutes is normally recommended. I would also recommend waiting an
hour between taking any calcium supplement and any iron supplement, as they
will work against one another. Taking your vitamins (with or without iron
supplements) should also be taken an hour apart from you calcium
supplement. I find that liquid vitamins work the best for me, and I talk
about the reasons why on my ragdolldude profile and blog. I've been told
in seminars and in classes prior to roux-en-y surgery that liquids are
preferred to pills for bariatric patients. I notice the difference in my
energy and weight loss, even 1 1/2 years post op.

i am a nurse and we "try" to give iron one hour before and after
any other medications and meals. calcium and iron do kinda cancel out one
another so definantely seperate them. Good luck and i hope this helps...

If you can take your iron with some orange juice (or something with vitamin
C) you will get more bang for your buck. It is also OK to take with any
food that does not have calcium in it. The best meal to take iron with
would be a steak with some orange juice.
