Hi Cindy, I haven't had surgery yet but I wanted to say how sorry I am for
your difficulties. We have been told in my WLS support group that this is a
potential problem. We all think these kind of things won't happen to us,
but unfortunately they sometimes do. I hope things are going better.

Stricture of various degrees happen approx. 10% of the time. As you heal
the amount of scar tissue can close off the attachment that was made. Your
surgeon should be able to open it rather quickly.

Yes, I had this same problem at 3 weeks out. I went back to the hospital
and I had a stricture which they had to open. Since then I haven't had
this problem. I hadnt had a bm in over 10 days and everything was coming
back. Mostly foam. Mamash

I had a *VERY PAINFUL* blockage about four months past my RNY surgery.
These things are life threatening and must be addressed immediately. The
same surgeon who did my RNY was summoned in the middle of the night for the
emergency surgery. He said afterwards that the blockage was unrelated to
the RNY surgery ... but I not totally convinced. My RNY was laproscopic
but, for the emergency surgery, they zipped me open from about 4"
above my navel to the top of my pubic area (closed with 27 staples). Before
being wheeled into the OR from the ER, I experienced some of the most
intense pain of my life for about seven hours. When I got to the ER, they
discovered that I was having a heart attack but continued with the surgery
anyway. The cardiac people later told me that I had what is called a
"takotsubo" heart attack (also life threatening), probably
brought on by the intense and prolonged pain. I was subsequently in ICU for
about four days because of this. Anyway, I'm OK now but that blockage and
its side effects were quite a scare for everyone. (I had further
complications after the emergency surgery, but that's another story for
another time.) Anyone who has had abdominal/bowel surgery has a heightened
probability of having a blockage so, even though your blockage has been
repaired, it could well happen again. So, keep on top of any abdominal pain
you experience in the future, Cindy, and get immediate help. Call 911 if
necesary because, once again, intestinal blockages are LIFE THREATENING.

The program that I had my RNY done through calls this the "window of
misery". They explained that it's part of the healing process and it
depends for each person, but usually it's between weeks 4 and 6. They said
that you should go back step by step to see what you could eat. As long as
you can drink water, it's fine. I'm sorry that you had a complete
blockage, and I hope that you feel better soon! **hugs**

I am four weeks out and had to have an EGD to dilate my stoma on Wednesday.
I feel SO much better. When you say you had a complete blockage and had
to have another surgery, are you not referring to a stricture? You had to
have another surgery or scope?

I had a stricture at 2 wks & again at 4 wks. Felt terrible &
certainly wondered if the whole thing had been in vain. Knew what was going
on the 2nd time & did not wait to get dehydrated. Did not even have to
have IV fluids the 2nd time. They put me out & I never had pain after.
Just recovery time. They said not to worry, it just meant I was healing
well.
8 months and 1377 lbs down & it was worth every minute of those poor
first 2-3 months.
God BLess & Good Luck.
