Question:
SHARP PAIN UNDER INCISION WHEN I COUGH
HELLO ALL. I HAD RNY LAPROSCOPIC ON DEC 4TH AND JUST SEEN DOCTOR FOR 6 WEEK CHECK UP LAST WEEK. HE TOLD ME I COULD NOW START JOGGING FOR EXCERSISE. I DID SO THE NEXT DAY AND THAT NIGHT WHILE SLEEPING I NOTICED A SHARP PAIN UNDER AN INCISION MARK IN MY STOMACH WHEN I WOULD MOVE MY LEFT LEG. I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS A SORE PAIN FROM JOGGING AND IT WENT AWAY, BUT NOW ITS BACK ONLY WHEN I COUGH. IF I PUSH ON THE INCISION WHEN I COUGH IT DOESNT HURT BUT IF I FORGET TO PUT PRESSURE ON IT THEN I GET THAT SHARP PAIN AGAIN. I HAVE A CALL INTO MY SURGEN ABOUT THIS BUT I FIGURED I'D ASK HERE WHILE WAITING FOR A CALL BACK BECAUSE YOU PEOPLE KNOW MORE MOST OF THE TIME BECAUSE OF THE BEEN THERE DONE THAT FACTOR. ANY ONE HAVE THIS PAIN BEOFRE AND KNOW WHAT IT IS? — PHATBOY (posted on January 22, 2007)

I had the same type of pain - on my left side. My surgeon told me that it
is very common to have pain on the side where the surgeon goes through more
of the muscle & the incision is slightly latger than the others. The
pain is the result of overing exercion such as bending & reaching at
the same time.
Laying low & watching your movement for a couple of days helps a bit.
Mine came back when I slipped on the ice. Ouch!!

Sounds like you did what I did.. ripped a stitch. Take it easy, don't bend
or reach or stoop for a few days and it will calm down.
There are tons of stitches inside that take a long time to heal. Just
because the surface ones may be healed does not mean the others will be.

When I woke from surgery I had the same type of pain. I am the queen of the
wimps, and I don't tolerate ANY pain. They had put an abdominal binder on
me, which helped. Prior to surgery I had started exercising, and oding
cough and deep breathing exercises as well. As an RN I used to teach my
patients how to get up and down from bed/chairs, to avoid as much pain as
possible.
It took about 8 weeks for the pain to go away. And as I got busier, and
losing weight, the binder got bigger, and less helpful. Finally one night I
was real tireed and fell asleep on my left side (the side that hurt), and
have not had any problems since.
i hope this helps. Each person is different. I know one lady who had very
little pain and bounced back so well. Me, as I said, I'm a wimp, BIG TIME.
Good luck, deep breathe, cough, and try to get exercise when ok'd by your
doc.

I developed a hernia in the same place you mention. You should check this
out. A hernia may be just starting in your case. I have to push on mine to
get it to stop hurting, sometimes. I am awaiting surgery to repair it. Good
luck. Barbara
