Question:
Having a problem
I am 4 weeks post-op and am having some problems with BM's. They are normal but very painful. Has anyone had this problem. This makes it almost impossible to eat. I can still handle my water. Thanks. — JillmHanson (posted on March 29, 2006)

Chances are you are dehyrdrated-- try to increase your fluid. Also, some
liquids are known for their ability to help ease things along-- coffee can
help in this regard.
Additionally, review what you are eating. At 4 weeks out, your system is
still adjusting to its surgery and is probably incapable of handling dense
fiber; and, if you are having difficulty staying as hydrated as you should,
any foods that would absorb the fluid in your system will also contribute
to painful BM's.

When I do have a bm about every 3 or four days....I know I am in for a lot
of stomach cramping and pain until it is all passed...because it gets so
packed in there because we do not go as often as we used to.

My doc prescribed an OTC stool softener which luckily I did not need. A
friend who had the surgery a yr before me advised that when she started
pureed foods that she noted a problem with BM's. Her solution was a 1/2
cup of red beans daily for either lunch or supper. They have good protein
and fiber once you can eat "real food" try it. I have noticed a
big difference. Also force yourself to get in at least 2qts of water a
day. Don't count sugar free beverages or coffee and tea as water
either!!! Lack of hydration can cause many problems.
