Question:
I have severe asthma and wonder how long I will be in hospital after Lap-Band.
I have scars in my lung and very poor breathing. I have surgery on the 22 of Dec. And am worried about being home for christmas. Does anyone know, or gone through this? — showgrl290 (posted on December 13, 2005)

I don't think the surgery will affect your breathing much. I am not a
doctor ... but since they are not operating on your pulmonary system, it's
probably not a factor. You should ask your doctor.

Robyn,
Depending on your physician, the "average" Lap Band is
accomplished on a out patient basis (some like an overnight stay). Mine
was done at 9 am and I was discharged at 1:30 pm the same day. However, I
had no complications, so this is highly dependent on your MD and you. Your
MD and your anesthesiologist will assess your specific risks and can give
you more specific advise.
Congratulations! What a great Christmas present...

I also struggle with asthma. I am banded. It took me a good month before I
was back to normal, about two weeks to not feel alot of the pain from
surgery. Although, the band has not been good for me and my asthma at all.
I should have done more research on my wls options. I realize every case is
different and everyone has a right to choose what wls they want to do. I
know the hardship of asthma and I think my conditon got worse with being
banded.

I have asthma, too, and underwent the RNY in normal time. I was in the
hospital for three days, including surgery day. Just be sure the
anesthesiologist and surgeon are aware of your problems.

I too have asthma I am 8 days post op. I didn't even use the Spirometer
post op. my breathing was fine. I had my Albuterol bedside but rarely used
it. Best of luck on your journey.
