Check with your insurance company and policy. Most policies state that it
has to be a supervised diet with regular weigh-ins and diaries of what you
eat and your exercise documented. The supervised diet weeds out those who
are not serious about surgery, in my opinion. It also gives documented
proof if an appeal is to be filed. It is in your best interest if you are
serious about this to get with a dietician and start the supervised diet.

Most (if not all) will not accept non-supervised diets. If you are lucky,
your insurance will only require 6 months supervised. I have heard of some
that require a year!
Good Luck!

Contact your primary care doctor and begin a supervised diet. Before you do
that though contact your insurance company and find out exactly what they
want your doctor to document monthly. I had to redo my diet because it was
not documented properly by my doctor!! 6 Months is a long time to have to
redo something! Good Luck!

If your insurance has a strict policy of dr. supervised diet (they want to
see monthly weigh ins, etc.) it will be tough. I had 2 dr supervised diets,
but they were a few years old. To show that I had continued to try on my
own, I provided them with a photo journal. My weight fluctuations over the
years were pretty obvious (I gained and lost 50-60lbs a few times in 7
years). So I could show them my diet patterns through photos. I also ran a
few marathons while overweight. I included those photos too.
Good luck.

My doctor asked me about dieting. I just started listing everything I had
tried and that was all they needed. I did not have to show prof, although I
could have if needed. I went to the Barix center and they are pretty strict
but took my word for it. I had a BM of 40 and no co-morbidities and was
approved after my first letter. So keep the faith, it will happen. Good
luck to you.

Call your doc today so you can get started. The sooner you start, the
sooner you can meet the requirement

It all depends on your insurance company. I did not have to do a
supervised diet. I had been asked what diets I have tried and that was it.
What insurance company do you have?
