Question:
It feels like something is stuck in my throat.
I looked through the library and found minimal information on this subject. After I ate last night, it felt as though something was stuck in my throat. I drank and drank water and could not get rid of the feeling. When I woke up this morning it was gone. I just tried eating again and it the same feeling is back. It is very uncomfortable, want to keep swallowing. Tried to throw up, but only had the dry heaves. Anyone else have/had this? — LindaBF (posted on June 4, 2003)

Linda, I am 18 days post op and I had the same thing happen to me last
night. I ate some soft rice, but it just seemed as if it was hung in my
throat. Well to make a long story short the only way I could get rid to
the feeling in my throat is to throw up. I felt so much better after that.
I did learn that I can't eat rice like I use to. That is the good thing
with this surgery--it really does help our eating habits. Good luck to
you!

I'm 2-months post-op and get this alot. I have a stuck feeling, then I
start spitting in a cup. Then I have dry heaves. Then I eventually throw
something up. I have no idea what is going on. I'm still trying to figure
it out. But you are not alone.

The only time this happens to me is when I do not chew well. Make sure you
chew everything down to nothing then chew some more. ~Sidney~ Open RNY

I totally understand what you are going through. I am actually 14 weeks
out and there are 3 times this happens to me. 1 if I don't chew well
enough. 2 if my bite (this is going to sound a little wierd) is not BIG
enough to push my palate down. 3 if the texture of the food is just to
dry. Vomiting usually helps with this, but I have had the feeling before
for a number of days, it makes water drinking very hard. Just keep in mind
what, how much, and how dry are the foods you are eating.

Hi! I just wanted to add my 2 cents in. I am 6 weeks postop and i have
this ALL the time, no matter if its liquid or solid. I have done it on
milk, water and chix and vegetables. I think its because i have tried to
drink too much too quickly and tried to eat too much too quickly. I have
been trying to be more aware of the problem and it seems to go away, till i
slip again! Makes it frustrating to get in water when you have to use all
day to get in one bottle, but its getting better. I can tell the pouch is
stretching a bit. Good luck to you! 4/22 lapRNY -40

do you have any allergies? Allergy season is in full bore and I often get
this stuck in the throat feeling from a build up of mucas in my throat.
Just a thought.

Your stoma is clogged up. Hurts, doesn't it! Just a lesson about chewing
your food really, really, really well before swallowing. Truth of the
matter is, it will eventually clear up, but it could take as long as a
week. In the meantime, keep that water coming. You want to avoid
dehydration at all costs ...

I've had this happen to me. It's not a plesant thing to happen. I asked my
doc about it, and he said to take smaller bites, chew chew chew, and don't
take another bite for about 5 seconds after you swallow. It's realy helped
me a lot! Good luck! 6 weeks out, down 34 lbs!

I know this is off the wall and may not be the problem with any of you,
but...... I had that happen to me after shoulder surgery. I thought I was
choking to death. Turns out my uglava was swollen from the breathing tube
and maybe all the throwing up I did in the recovery room. The reason I
bring this up is after my RNY I tried drinking Crystal lite and the same
thing happened. A nurse told me it may be an allergy. I have always been
sensitive to lemon in anything, (sore throat) and when I stopped drinking
the lemon flavor my throat and uglava returned to normal. Hope this helps
someone!

You had a blocked stoma...this happens to me frequently. I can usually make
myself sick and that helps. If it is really blocked I just continue to try
to push fluids even though they come back up. My doc says that this is the
right thing to do. IF IT CONTINUES FOR 24 HOURS CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR. You
may need to be scoped.

blocking my stoma.I started vomiting blood and went to the ER. I am soooo
much better now.Get it checked out,NOW. :)
