Question:
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAP RNY AND RNY
I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THIS SURGERY.ANY INFO AND NEW YORK DOCTORS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. — CHERYL P. (posted on October 9, 1999)

At the lecture I went to, they explained it to us this way: with regular
surgery, they put in the rows of staples, then they overstitch the staples
with sutures. This is to prevent leakage at the staple line, which can
cause serious complications. With Laparascopic surgery, the suturing is not
done, only the stapling. The surgical group I am going with said that it is
for this reason that they do not do Lap surgery. Hope that helps.

I looked at the webcast of the LAP RNY that Carnie Phillips had at Alvarado
and they were indeed doing sutures through the LAP. You can see for
yourself, if someone has information to the contrary I would definitely be
interested in knowing this. I think the reality is that the learning curve
for the LAP is difficult and instead of admitting this other surgeons are
saying negative things about the LAP instead.
