Question:
repair of hiatal hernia
I was told 4 years ago by my Dr. who did surgery on my hiatal hernia that I was no longer able to have any type of weight loss surgery. Does anyone have any info on this? — nurse1994 (posted on September 18, 2009)

I would strongly recommend you get a second opinion. When I got my band
five years ago, my doc also repaired a hiatal hernia that I did not know I
had. No problems. Last April my band had to be removed because of a
severe slip and again, a second hiatial hernia was repaired. Just last
month, Aug.10th, I had the gastric sleeve done. I have had no problems, I
have lost 26 pounds and feel great. It can be done! Don't give up hope.

I had RNY on 9/3, my Doc. already had told me I had a hiatal hernia, and he
would repair it for me. I was taking Prilosec OTC since '04, and since my
surgery (and repair) I have not needed the prilosec. I have lost 18 lbs.
since my surgery! Find another Dr., like the other poster stated - good
luck to you.

Yes, you can have gastric bypass after having had the hiatal hernia
repaired. I had a Nissen Fundolication done on my hiatal hernia about 2
years before I had RNY. My RNY surgeon had to "take down" the
Nissen before she could complete the RNY, she said she needed that part of
my stomach back to form the pouch. She did my surgery as an open one due to
the complication of having to take down the other surgery first. It went
fine and I had no problems following the RNY. Well, no problems until I had
a bowel obstruction at 18 months out and another one at 8 years out, those
requried two more open surgeries, both directly related to scar tissue from
the RNY surgery. Look around for a surgeon that can do the take down and
RNY, they are out there. Best of luck to you!

I would get a second opinion. When I had the Lap-Band five years ago, the
doc repaired a hiatial hernia at the same time that I didn't even know I
had. I have since had the band removed and now have the gastric sleeve.
No problem.
