Question:
Regaining of wieght after surgery
I was just wondering if there were any other people here in the site that had gastric bypass. I have gained after 6 years 60 lbs. Just wondering how your handling it and maybe I could get some insite into what has brought you back on track. Thanks so much in advance if you can answer this question for me. — Nanna050 (posted on May 23, 2009)

Just know that you're not alone. I had RNY in Sept '04 and lost a total,
yes, a total of 60 lbs in all. I have gained 30 lbs back and still have
not conditioned my mind to get back on track. For me it starts in the head
and yes, I want the smaller body, but my mind hasn't committed. That's the
part I'm working on right now, because I know that once I get my mind
right, the weight will come off. Wishing you the best.

I have gained so much back. Everyday I tell myseldf that I do not eat that
much How could I gain that much back. I am really down. I say if I can only
move more I would not gain the weight. I get so tried and my legs hurt so
much. I think if I did not work the night shift it would be better. I could
live normal. Am one out there with help - support e-mial me [email protected]
and yes I have seen my doc - but no answers

I had gastric bypass and am still in the process of losing weight... 81 lbs
so far in 5.5 months. However, I have trouble following the diet (no
surprise since I couldn't follow diets before surgery.) I started working
with the Beck diet solution wl workbook... which is super. Also check out
infor on the 5 day pouch test. Barietriceating.com has info about getting
back on track, and how to chart what you are doing each day. I print them
out and keep track a few days a week and it really makes you aware of what
you are doing... drinking at meals (don't), how many calories you are
really consuming, wheere and when you are getting off track (I do well at
home, I get off track when caring for my Mom, or when working out of town.)
When are you eating as planned, when you are eating unplanned snacks or
meals. Best of luck, and get back on track today...Today's the only day we
can do anything about.

I am 5 years out and I have not gained any weight back. I lost a total of
130 lbs. The whole key to keeping the weight off is to go back to the
basics. Eat small meals all day. The surgery only works if you eat. Do Not
do protein shakes. I believe that is why people gain the weight back to
begin with. Protein shakes are for body builders. To bulk you up. Not for
weight loss. Walk. Thats it, the weight should melt back off.

I am still in the process of losing. I had my surgery 10-31-07 and have
lost 140 lbs which I'm very happy about but I still have 40 lbs. to lose
and it is a very slow process. I wish I had paid more attention my first
year out and did what I was supposed to do but I saw the weight coming off
with no effort and didn't exercise or eat right...now I am paying for it.
I walk and find that I either don't lose or even gain, I watch what I eat
and I stay the same weight. I made it down to 239 but right now I am at
249 and that is with the exercising and walking. I was walking 2 miles a
day plus a half hour of cardio then I started doing a walking dvd at home
at 4 miles and still nothing. Now I will say, I am a grazer, I eat little
things during the day, not complete meals and when I was walking a lot, I
was craving strawberries and pineapple and thought hey, they are fruits, I
can't go wrong but they have a lot of sugar in them so yes, I did go wrong.
The surgery was a great tool for my stomach but I'm still working on my
head, that is where it has to be or it won't work. It's hard but I'm
determined to get these last 40 lbs. off and hopefully by then, I will have
gotten my mind together so that I won't gain it back. Good luck to all,
we're in this together!!!

I am 4 years out and had gained 30 lbs back. I recently (2 weeks ago)
started following the Atkins diet - which is high protein and lots of
vegetables. I have lost 10 lbs so far and hope to continue. It's been the
one way of eating I've found that stresses protein - which is what we need
from a post-op standpoint.
I gained weight back because I got lazy and was grazing - and eating carbs
instead of food with nutritional value. Since going on Atkins I've been
tracking my food intake on fitday.com - and it really helps keep me on
track. I can't help but think I should have been doing this (tracking my
food) 4 years ago - and I would never have gotten to this point.
Good luck!

Thank you ALL so much for the information you have provided me, I really
appreicate it and it will help, I know the rules just feel off like it was
said you could eat a little here and there and your still losing, HUGE
mistake, I have friends I'm now warning this could be you if you continue
to pick here and there.
Again, thank to all of you.

I 6 years out and have gained about 20 pounds. Have you heard of the 5 Day
Pouch Test? 2 days of just clear liquids, then introduce soft protein day
3 and all protein day 4 & 5. It is supposed to get you back in touch
with your pouch. Google 5 DPT and you can get the book, etc. I went to my
surgeon (not the one that did my surgury) and he tells me to run, but I
can't so I am trying to walk more. Good luck!

I am close to nine years post surgery and kept my weight down till I had a
baby three years ago. I also tried to remember that my surgeon had told me
that I would gain some back. At one point I was told average results were
to lose 70% of the weight you were overweight and then you could gain up to
30% of this back. I orginally lost 165 lbs and I gained around 40 back
within the last three years. It has definately become a stressor recently
but I'm just trying to focus on how to get back to basics, I'm also dealing
with other health issues that they say could be causing the weight gain.
