Question:
Will it hurt if I have a little soda
I am seven weeks post-op and I want just a little sip of soda. Is that ok at this point? — latracy1 (posted on May 21, 2009)

No, it's not really something you should add back to your diet, especially
full sugar soda...I could not tolerate even a sip (sf) for years post
op...Every now and then I might have a little SF gingerale with fruit juice
or lots of crushed ice to water it down...Or i take a sip of hubby's soda
now and then...Most surgeons and nuts will warn against carbonated
drinks...Cola actually triggers my urge for pizza, french fries, Doritos
and chips, pretzels, Mc D's! I can't drink cola or I want all the junk I
used to have with it...So I personally avoid it...But I do love gingerale
and that does not trigger the same food cravings at all! A little sip it
not going to kill ya if we are going to be perfectly honest here but it did
burn the holy heck outta my pouch at a year PO...Use you own discretion in
these matters...Question WHY you are told to not have certain foods and
then weigh and measure the risks to determine if it is a good enough reason
for you to avoid it forever...You are an adult and are in charge of your
own body...but do know that it is the behaviors that are what hurt you more
than the food itself...Moderation is always your best bet when in
doubt...Just my humble opinion...

Carbonation is not a friend to your pouch. I am over a year out and will
not try. Your pouch is even, technically, through healing. Please, not
being mean, don't do it.

Sorry, that was supposed to say that your pouch in not yet done healing.
Have you asked your doctor about soda pop? I wish you the best. Peace.

While some people can drink a little soda, it is a bad idea. It can fizz
and really hurt. Also the air will fill you up and you won't be able to
really eat.

I was told by my nut that if I needed sf colas to open them, let them sit
for 10 minutes and then drink. The surgeon is completely against carbonated
drinks for the reasons stated above and also, from what I understand, it
can do damage to your stoma. I was completely addicted to diet colas preop
but have had only a couple since surgery and that was simply because I
forgot how they tasted. Isn't it funny how your tastes change after wls?

My surgeon says that any carbonation with stretch your pouch or,in my case
(VSG), stomach, enough to ruin your surgery. My nutritionist told me that
when I'm out with friends and want a coke, to put rum in it...that kills
the carbonation! (But be careful of the calories.) I just drink Isopure and
pretend it's grape pop!

No, it's NEVER going to be okay. I don't know about your surgeon, but I
know that mine said I was to NEVER drink soda again. I have been told that
if it was flat and diet, it probably wouldn't hurt, but what's the point.
The fizz was the best part. Now, you will have to decide for yourself if
it's worth the risk. I don't know about you, but THIN and HEALTHY or
SODA--- I can skip it!!! Good luck!

I was told not to drink soda for the same reasons I see here but also
because the carbonation pulls the calcium out of your bones, can anyone
confirm or deny this? Now I'm wondering if its really true, thanks, Tammy
