Question:
8 days post op & I cheated.. Will this slow my weight loss??
I've been on a full liquid diet for a week now & I can't take it anymore. I'm actually starting to feel hungry. I ate 5 french fries & a few bites of baked fish. — slreis09 (posted on September 10, 2008)

Sorry I don't have an answer my surgery is schuduled for the 23rd. Your
question makes me so nervous though. Do you feel deprived? Are you
regretting have the surgery? What type of surgery did you have?

Well, I think we have all done things we shouldn't have. I know for sure I
am guilty of it and I'm not perfect. My only concern for you is that you
are still on the full liquid stage and eating regular foods could do more
harm than good...just from a medical standpoint of your small pouch. Did
your doc/nut say you could puree chunky soup and eat that? Mine did...all
docs/nuts are different. The full liquids aren't forever. Try to hang in
there. I can honestly say I never felt hungry...I could barely eat what I
needed to and honestly didn't get enough in. So I can't say I understand
how you feel. Just try to pick up where you left off and tell yourself you
will move on to better things soon! Good luck!

French Fries? are you trying to kill your self. I dumped on eggs after 3
weeks and let me tell you its was NO fun... at 8 days you need to be on
Full liquids so the new pouch can heal. Jello, yogurt, sf pudding, warm
broth ... If you get something stuck this early I assure you you wont do it
again...You have the tool , use it . Sorry but It pisses me off when
people go through all we go through to get the surgery and then disregard
all they have been told to keep them alive and healthy.

Careful, I too "cheated" and ended up back in the hospital
vomiting blood and the most awful pain of my life. I was dehydrated from
vomiting so much I actually had to spend the night getting IV fluids. Was
NOT worth it.Truely!

Just one question WHY? You are a foul. you went thru all this to cheat
already!!!!!!!

Sunni, Sunni, Sunni, you can't do that Honey, you gotta give your pouch
time to heal. i cheated on pre-op liquids, so i know how wanting something
to eat can drive you batty. I just got to 3 wks and am now in the
mechanical soft stage, believe me, i wanted to scream if i had to eat any
more pureed soup. please follow your nut/doc's instructions so we can
holler about how good we look in 6-8 mos. i need you here so we can
celebrate our success, not sick becuz we didn't follow the game plan. be
encouraged-it will get better-i promise, kim:)

At 8 days out I started myself on mushy foods. I figured if I was hungry my
body was telling me something. I ate mashed potatoes refried beans mushed
bananas. things like that. No meat though until about 2 weeks after I
started mushy food. Just be carefull I would cut out the fries, have mashed
better then fried just because the fat can make you sick. Nobody is
perfect, some people can handle it and some cant everyone is different so
its not fair to say oh you are definitly going to get sick. It wont slow
your weightloss just one time just make better food choices.

You are asking for trouble. Your staple line is not healed. There is a
reason they put you on liquids!

Please be careful with your new pouch. I think it's to early to get solid
foods. i was on liquids for a week I did pureed and soft foods for two
each. The doctor said I could do one week each, but I was scared of
hurting stomach. The first 4 weeks of adjusting to anykind of food was
hard because everything was making me sick. Take it slow.

No, your weight loss is not going to slow down!!!! If you did that every
day it would be a different story. It sounds like what happened to you was
something we've all been through (whether they admit it or not) old habits
sometimes die hard. You'll get there!! Here's what I did, I was a bit of
a slow healer and couldn't physically get myself to drive for 3 weeks after
surgery, I kid you not the first place i drove was to McDonalds!!! Insane
right?!!?!! I ordered a double cheeseburger, because every rny patient
needs to eat that lol well, it was also a dollar. I intended to take one
bite and be done, oh no, I took maybe 3 bites it tasted like heaven, then
could barely get in my house I was sick for HOURS!!! Made a believer out
of me fast. Even with that mistake 5 months ago, I've still lost 75 and
you will too! Don't beat yourself up, you're only human. You made the
difficult decision to have the surgery, which shows focus and desire, just
a little mess up. Please, email me if you want to talk more. Don't think
for a second you've stretched your pouch, you'll be just fine!!!!!

oh honey, you cant do that. you are asking for punishment eating fries
this early. I have yet to have surgery and am waiting for a date, but have
did 5 years of research. Why would you do that to yourself. Not to
mention, their are people fighting for their chance at life again by having
the surgery, and you cheat on your diet. I dont think you will be very
successful if you cant go more than 8 days without eating. i dont think
you were ready for the surgery.

it's not a matter of 'dieting' on the liquid diet -- it's a matter of your
stomach healing -- the liquids only is so your stomach has time to heal
from MAJOR surgery

I have to say that I agree with alot of these people, french fries?? What
are you trying to do?? Okay, the fish is a bit different as it is
healthier for you. DON'T eat any more fried foods or anything that you are
not supposed to. As someone else said, you have had your surgery, you now
have the tool. There are alot of people that would kill to be where you are
now. Having so much trouble trying to get approval!
If you are going to make this a habit, don't count on having too much
success with your WLS. It is a matter of changing your eating habits and
using the tool that you have been given. After all, if you try to use a
hammer to put in a screw, it doesn't work properly, does it?? It won't stay
where it is supposed to be. Just like your stomach will not do what it is
supposed to do if you don't use your tool properly. PLEASE, do yourself a
favour and follow the instructions from your doc and nut! I also suggest
that you stay away from ALL fast food places, you have now heard what it
can do to you!
I really hope that you can stick with it. WLS is NOT the easy way out as
some think. It is hard, and I think that you knew that before you had the
surgery. Stick to it and you will do fine. I know this was just one
occasion, let it be the last.
Good luck to you.

Boy, I feel bad for Sunni on how rude and hateful many of you have been.
She screwed up once......I can't imagine all of you are perfect either? She
told you all of ONE mess up, not that it was ongoing, but many of you
"assumed" she was doing this regularly or she shouldn't even have
had surgery.
Anyway! Lets bring her up, not down.
Sunni-
Get back on track ASAP and learn from your mistake. I too have had a bit of
a problem not tasting foods I shouldn't. I've swallowed a few bad things
since surgery (9 days ago). For the past week we had people from church
bring us meals. The food smelled delicious, complete with sides and
deserts. Anyway, I tasted one of the casseroles, savored the taste in my
mouth and then spit it in a napkin and threw it away. I know the best
choice is to not put it in your mouth, but spitting it out is an
alternative.
Blessings and good luck!

Sunni, I don't want to beat you up, but from now on when you are tempted
which I am sure will be often (cause we are all human, anyway) from now on
when tempted think about all of us out here who can't get insurance
approval for surgery and would give anything to be in your position. You
are one of the lucky ones! Take advantage, become the slim beautiful woman
that you deserve to be. It won't be long and you will look back on this
difficult time and be surprised by how fast it went by. Good luck! I am
thrilled for you and I know you will do fabulous!!!!

Hey girl I read some of these posts by other ppl and apparently not
everyone makes mistakes LOL! You are perfectly normal. You need to follow
your doctors orders and try to do the liquids. I just graduated from soup
to mushies and I know how hard it is but YOU CAN DO THIS! I dont think it
helps to beat yourself up or have other ppl beat you up about it. Self
control is somethig we are ALL learning. Forgive yourself for the past and
start over on those liquids. I totally understand, if you read my post
about the first week I started eating creamy soups when I was supposed to
be on only broth type soups. I am not proud of that but I did it and I can
admit it. We all deal with this new lifestyle our own way in our own time.
I guarantee we have ALL had some sort of failures in the past or they are
still to come. My best advice would be to talk to your Doctor and explain
how you are feeling. Maybe he can change the food plan some to accomodate
you. Remember what you read here are opinions and experiences of all
different people. Not all are right or wrong for you. You must decide this
between you , your body and of course your doctor. Hang in there. Life is
going to get better and you WILL succeed!

i am just responding to the comment one other girl made. i dont think we
are being hateful..if she doesnt want our opinion she shouldnt ask for it.
what do you expect..sometimes the truth hurts. we're not saying it to be
mean, its called contructive critisism. if you cant handle it only 5 days
out..then you will fail in the long run. NO, its not gonna stretch her
pouch, and yes, we all do make mistakes, but when you ask us for sympothy,
dont expect it.

Ok everyone, thanks so much for all of your opinions.. Points well taken!!
Just to clarify, it's not that I wanted french fries so much that I just
couldn't take it anymore, I just needed to taste "real" food in
my mouth. We ARE ALL human, and we all make mistakes. Whether you want to
admit it or not, the MAJORITY of people here have all made bad choices--
this is why we nedd weight loss surgery in the first place:) You can say
rude and hurtful things if you like but I will do well!! And to the last
comment made, constructive criticism doesn't need to be mean! God Bless
everyone and good luck!

Sunni, no one is trying to be rude to you, especially not me. I need all
the help I can get. It just really bothers me because there are SO many
people fighting to have this surgery and who actually will stick to the
plan and not cheat, and you cheat. You are only human and every one screws
ups. I am sorry if I came accross kinda harsh. That is not my intentions.
I hope you do very well with this, but for my closing statement when your
stomache is healed, and you have that craving, whats gonna stop you then.
It would be horrible for you to have gone through all of this in vein.
Bypass should not be for the people who cheat a week out. Its just not
right to those who are less fortunate.

If U R 8 days post-op & even able 2 cheat without being keeled over in
excruciating pain, consider u'r self lucky. However, u will stop cheating
when this does happen 2 u. Believe me!! I'm 7 years post-op, i've been
there.

Sunni... Let me start off by telling you that I am only 18 days out and I
feel your pain... When I got home from the hospital I swore I was feeling
hungry... I talked to my nutritionist and she said it was head hunger (I
can believe that)... but like I said Im 18 days out now and I still feel
hungry at times... Everyone is different... Some people dont ever feel
hungry, some do, some dont ever feel full, some do... I too ate 3 french
fries at 8/9 days out and OH MY GOSH they tasted awesome... But that was
all I needed to make me feel better... That small taste of something solid
and salty... and I have fallowed my diet since... Sometimes thats all we
need is a small taste of something and we are good for a while... We all
had this surgery for the same reasons... Because we all love food... But
you only ate 5 fries... Not the whole container... We all have demons to
face as far as food is concerned... I know I didnt stop loving food just
because I had this surgery... I just have to learn to love other healthier
foods... And I am in the process of doing that (It is a process)... And so
are you... So dont beat yourself up over 5 fries... And another thing...
what makes people so sure you didnt fight to get this surgery... Why
because you have already had it... I too investigated this surgery and all
that pertains to it and I too said I was going to do it by the book if I
got approved for it... and I messed up... and I just might mess up again...
Nobody goes into this surgery thinking (Im gonna get this surgery so I can
mess up on it)... And one more thing... If we all were able to stick to
something 100% then we would all be thin from dieting and would never have
needed this surgery in the first place... God Bless Sweetie and I know WE
can do this!!!

i agree with Lisa. some of the people on this site are so damm RUDE!!!!!!!!
They act like they are perfect and they never made a mistake. i don't agree
with eating the fries especially so early on but when you make a mistake
just pick yourself up and do better. EVERYONE on this site has made plenty
of mistakes, including myself, otherwise we would not have to have this
surgery to begin with. Dont let them get you down.

Sunni, We all have had our moments. I've bent the rules several times, but
have paid the price for it too.
The suggestion about tasting and not swallowing it is a good one if you
feel you can't resist, but try to follow the plan as closely as you can.You
will have it all back at some point, just differently.
You will likely find your tastes have changed. You may or may not have
trouble with sugar, but sugar is bad news even for non GB patients. Try to
stick to Splenda or the like and sugar-free products. Watch out for the
carbs on some of the sugar-free items, though. Some are higher than the
regular versions. Some people dump horrible on sweets, you may or may not,
and it may be from now on. Fried foods can be horrible and can be it's own
lesson. Meats will likely be the hardest thing to deal with, especially
high-fat and tough grained meats like beef and pork. Buy a good ground
beef like chuck or round, and you might need to have them grind it finer.
You might consider ground chicken or turkey, too. There are a lot of good
things you will be able to eat soon. Some will be easier, some harder, and
every one is different. Peanut butter kills me unless it's made like a
grilled cheese, but I can eat chili and hot peppers with no problem.
Tomatoes kill some people, they help me handle meat easier. Go figure.
Salsa is wonderful and helps satisfy cravings. Eggs I used to love, now
they hate me. Lol
I hope you find your own comfort range as you continue your journey. I'm
sorry some were so rough on you, but I love the spirit you showed in your
responses. To speak of all those who are having difficulty in getting the
surgery is adding apples and oranges. True though it may be, it has nothing
to do with you, any more than starving people in other parts of the world
is a reason you should over eat to finish all the food on your plate.
Sometimes sincere and well meaning people do much harm without meaning to.
I'm glad you aren't getting discouraged and I hope you'll redetermine to
succeed in becoming the wonderful thin person God intends for you to be.
Feel free to give me a shout anytime I may be of assistance to you, or if
you just want to talk about something. Hang in there.
