Question:
Would it kill me if I had a little real coffee? Like mix half real and half decafe?
I don't miss food...I miss my coffee!!! By the way I am doing great! 1 week out! Lesleigh — lesleigh07 (posted on December 18, 2007)

Depends on how far out you are but I have regular coffee once in a while
and I am 15 months out.

I would avoid caffeine for several more weeks. I loved coffee too. But, I
did buy decaffinated coffee and drank that for about 6 months. Caffinated
drinks may act as a diarrhetic, and may dehyrdate you. I used to take a
blood pressure pill, and my surgeon told me to not take it past surgery, as
it was a diarrhetic. Getting enough fluid is a problem for a lot of people
post surgery. I loved coffee too, but I succumbed to using decaffinated
coffee for about 8-9 months past surgery. I'd recommend the same.

Not as yet. I've heard some do drink it at about 5 months or so out,
HOWEVER, just remember with regular coffee, it has caffine. Caffine
INCREASES your appetite. Do you really want to risk gaining weight instead
of losing it and stretching your pouch? Think about this. Good luck, God
bless and welcome to the losing side!

I'm with you there. I would turn down a hot fudge sunday for the perfect
cup of coffee.

I had RNY in July of this year and I have 1 or 2 cups of coffee a day.
Because coffee is a diearetic you have to be careful of dehydration so
drink plenty of water. Good Luck

I'm with you as I love my starbucks latte's..low fat of course. But I've
been told even decaf has some caffeine in it - and as everyone's already
pointed out - it is dieuritc and can cause hunger.
Try hot chocolate protein mix - it's better than nothing and gives the hot
feeling...I too can't wait for 6/14/2008 as I will be having a cup - that's
6 months out for me too!

Hi Lesleigh, it's good to hear you're doing so well so shortly after
surgery. Just wanted to pop in to add that caffeine also robs calcium from
your system. I'm 10 weeks out and miss my coffee, too! ;-)

I also have coffee and I had my surgery in July. I try not to have more
than two cups a day. If I have any more I make it decaffinated. Drink
plenty of water. Norma Mathis

Hi I was having trouble with constipation and at 1 mth check up my dr
advised me to drink a cup of coffee (decaf of course) with some milk or
milk product in it so it is fine. The nutritionist even said that a cup a
day would not hurt as long as it is decaf. Good luck and hope that you
continue to have a great recovery.

I am over a year out and have lost 196 pounds and have a normal BMI now. I
drink coffee every day and have since about 2 weeks post op. It doesn't
bother me, nor did it affect my weight loss. Go ahead and drink it.
You'll have to test it though to be sure it doesn't upset your stomach.

First, coffee consumption aids struggling democracies throughout Central
America-- drinking coffee (and they don't grow decaf there) is, therefore,
American.
Second, caffeine is a common ingredient in appetite suppressants because it
tends to decrease appetite.
Third, the caffeine can impede calcium absorption. Rather than drink less
coffee, just take more calcium citrate tablets (that's an easy one).
Fourth, coffee is no more a diuretic than drinking a big glass of water
(any liquid we consume makes us want to empty our bladders). But, you
still need to watch your total fluid intake.
Lastly, given how little food you'll have in your system, you might react
to the caffeine differently. if you are getting jumpy after drinking coffe
(and you don't enjoy that feeling), cut down-- but not so much that you
experience coffee withdawal headaches.

I have had my 2 morning cups starting at about 3 mos. I have had no
problems but I did increase my fluid intake to compensate for the caffeine.

Hi Lesleigh, thanks for writing. Caffine can be a real problem, especially
for a "young" wls patient. I encourage the less caffine the
better. Having said that, no a small amount won't hurt you, but make a
deal with yourself. 16 oz of water to one cup of coffee with as little
caffine as possible. Enjoy your one cup of coffee, then don't allow
yourself another until you have 16 oz of water down. You need hydration,
so you must keep up on it, and moderation in all things balances out. Keep
the caffine as low as possible as long as possible (years). Caffine will
increase your appitite and ruin your honeymoon period, it can also
encourage ulcers and other "issues". You decide and I am certain
you will be wise when you do. Take care. Patricia P.
