Question:
Hi, I am 6 weeks out from surgery and Friday after eating I got

really sick and was vomiting white foam. I ate a small bit on Sat. and the same thing happened. I was okay on Sunday but today I am having the same problem. Very bad stomach pain I called my surgeon office and spoke with a nurse she called me in a Rx for a medication to treat bowel spasms and she says this is normal. Has anyone had this type of pain before?    — miskinney (posted on October 29, 2007)

You don't mention what type of surgery you had. Responses to food are different for the different types of surgery. I have a band. With the band, if you are taking big bites, not chewing well enough, etc. you can have an adverse reaction. The "white foam" you are speaking of is basically stomach juices/saliva. I suggest you eat very small amounts, very slowly and chew very well. Also, you might have better luck if you stay with soft foods (mashed potatos, yogurt, etc) until your stomach has a chance to get used to food again. Hope this helps. Vicki

I had it and my surgeon told me to take Pepto Bismo as directed on the bottle. Whenever I have pain in my stomach I take it and it works instantly.

I had open gastric bypass on 9/10/07. About a week ago, I started foaming and vomiting after everything except water. Called doctor yesterday, and they put me on Prilosec and Carafate, which is a medicine to treat ulcers. I have been on liquids for a couple of days now. Dr. said if I can't get my 64 oz of liquid in, I will have to go to the hospital for an IV. This gives me incentive to drink my fluids.

Papaya enzyme will help to break up food in your pouch & might help decrease the sliming and pain if it is from food sitting.

Welcome to the "foamies". I believe it is very normal and common. Always check with your doctor. Do you have a local support group you might be able to attend. Sometimes being around others who have been there is helpful. I had this problem for a while. Eat R E A L L Y slowly. Very small bites at a time. Chew, chew chew and then chew some more. I was shocked at how rediculously slow I had to eat in the begining. Good luck! It gets easier...
