According to the information that I have learned, it will not be covered
through individual insurance. You're better off looking into self pay
options.

My husband and I are self-employed and we purchase our own insurance. The
insurance covered all of my surgery. But beware it is very expensive, we
pay over $900 every other month and we don't have office call or
prescription coverage. But we do have 100% of hospitalization.
So you would probably be better off to investigate financing or self-pay
options.

Kelly,
since your insurance won't cover lap-band, Have you cosidered the bypass
with your BMI of 52 I think the bypass would probably work better for you
at getting alot of weight off fast. You may not be able to qualify or
afford an indvidual policy., especially if they require a physical or ask
about your weight and they could have a pre-existing conditions clause that
would disqualify you anyhow. Also how many policies that you can afford
and qualify for would cover the lap band? YOu don't mention why you
decided on the lap band. Maybe consult a weight loss surgery practice to
see what would be best for your situation. I wanted the lap band too, but
when I met the surgeon and consulted and found out the facts, bypass was
the better choice for me, and the band was stilll considered experimental
and insurance wouldn't pay. My BMI was 43.5 and the bypass was better
because of the physical restrictive and mal absorption aspects.
Best of Luck

Kelly, sorry to hear about the trouble your having. My insurance does not
cover the lap band either. They said it is tempory and requires several
doctor visits. I hope you get approval from someone. Good Luck. I had
gastro bypass and it was done through 5 little holes and I am very pleased,
I am 1 month post op and 30 pounds lost so far. Keep us posted.

That's great! I think we all get a little scared about the surgery. I have
not had any children either and don't plan on having any in the near Future
(maybe later) Unless you are planning to have children with in the next
couple years it should be fine to go ahead with the surgery. It's a big
choice to make. Good Luck!- Fran

Since children aren't in your immediate future, you can have the gastric
bypass. If someday you decide to have children you will be healthier and
hopefully not have the fertlity issues that many MO women have. You will
certainly be at a lower risk of many pregnancy complications that are
aggrevated/brought on by being MO. You also would be a better Mom because
you physically have the strength and energy to take care of and play with
your kids and be physcially involved in their lives and not just sitting
on the sidelines because your too fat/big/tired to do things with them.
You have to wait about 18-24 months post op from a gastric bypass to get
pregnant. Even with the lap band, immediate pregnancy isn't recommended .
Have you consulted with a WLS surgeon yet? Certainly is your insurance pays
for surgery, might be a good idea to consult and ask questions and learn
all the facts.
Best wishes
