Question:
Clarifying my question about Alcohol Consumption
Thank to all of you who responded to what was actually asked. For the rest of you, I wanted to clarify a few things. 1.) I already KNOW that drinking makes you drunk a lot faster after WLS 2.) I am 2 years post op, not THINKING of WLS and I don't NEED to have a drink, but if I desire to go to a going away party and drink a drink, I will, thank you very much. It is in no way hindering my WLS as you will see if yu'd like to check out my profile 3.) THE QUESTION WAS~ Would a post op WLS patient blow higher on a breathalyzer test off of say, one drink, compared to someone who didn't have WLS. The rest of my last question post was just a background on WHY I was curious 4.) I was just CURIOUS as to the above, not NEEDING to know because I'm an alcoholic, drink all the time and/or got tested, I am just CURIOUS and was wondering if anyone might know the answer too As for everyone who automatically ATTACKED, chill out! Didn't your mother's teach you if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all?!?!?! You also need to READ and COMPREHEND what is being asked before you try to be brilliant and put in your two cents which had nothing to do with what I was asking — cedsangel (posted on March 30, 2006)

Becareful when drinking because we are more prone to developing liver
problems due to drinking. I hope that you are able to get the answer to
your question without being judged ;}

After the RNY the booze is absorbed directly into the small intestine. It
hits hard and fast! Yes! just ONE drink can get you a DUI, espically with
the .8 standard. I rarely drink but if I got stopped I would demand a blood
test since the time delay might save a DUI since post ops sober up fast
too. DONT RISK YOU LIFE OR OTHERS! Dont drink and drive after WLS! A
member of our support group got a DUI on JUST ONE DRINK!

Hi Kay,
I like you. You hit on one of my pet peeves regarding how people answer
questions on this board. It seems that SOME people just fixate on some
small aspect of the question without looking at it in the context of the
WHOLE question. Maybe they just stop reading when they see one word, like
alcohol. I completely understand that you are NOT an alcoholic and risking
damage to your liver. I also understand that you are NOT drinking and
driving. When I read your question I too became curious about the answer.
Just because we feel the effects of alcohol faster does not necessarily
make our blood alcohol level higher, which would show up on a breath test.
(But I'm not 100% certain of this.) But in any case, we had this surgery
to be NORMAL, and I don't think an occasional drink is going to be the end
of the world. Congratulations on your success.

ACOORDING TO MY SURGEON DR PHILIP SCHAUER the new president of the ASBS
your blood alcohol and breathalyzer test will DEFINETELY spike after the
RNY. A member of our support group got a DUI after ONE drink. Think
whatever you want but thats the truth. The booze is absorbed directly in
the small intestine. Thats why people get tipsy fast.

Oh My, Oh My,
This is such an emotionally charged area, although I'm not sure why!!!!!
Because of our altered anatomy, I personnally was not educated about the
effects of alcohol. I am currently drinking alcohol beyond my wildest
imaginations. I am hoping I will stop, however, I do not know. All of you,
please be kind to each other. Life is short and we should treat each other
kindly.Do not judge me. I try.

Way to go, some people really need a lesson in manners. Here's a
suggestion: Why don't you go to your local police station with this
question? They may even offer to test you sober, then with one drink. You
never know, this may be valuable information for them as well. Take care.

Kay... Glad you clarified. I am new to these forums but when I did post
one of the answers was nasty and steeped in sarcasm. I don't understand
the seething hostility but suspect there is a lot of "Fat" anger
that has built up without an outlet.

Heheh... I like that - "fat anger". Man alive, is that true or
what? I think it's because we can't use food as a coping mechanism anymore
so it makes us cranky. :-) Jennifer

I am so glad you posted again. A couple of the replies to your previous
post irritated the crap (to put it nicely) out of me!!! I think you posted
a really good question. I have often wondered the same thing.

I've been curious about this too. Why? Not because I'm an alcoholic,
because I'm a normal person who likes to have a social drink once in a
while - and by once in a while I mean maybe once every month or two.
Whether or not that makes you a bad person is not for anybody else to
judge. Nobody should be treated badly for asking a question. ........ In
answer to your question, I've been told some bars in large cities actually
have breathalizers on site so people can be sure they're under the legal
limit before they get behind the wheel (smart huh?)... I'd ask around and
see if any in your area do that, then you could find out right then and
there. Good luck.

kay, you are sassy! love it..... just thought i would put my 2 cents in. my
answer to your question is yes you will blow higher.... just like anyone
else even if they have not had surgery. when you feel tipsy that means
there is alcohol in your system. some tolerate it more than others, but
drunk is drunk no matter your stomach size. I think that I will ask some of
my PD friends if we can do a test. It might make for a fun night. So, I say
"have a drink on me" and try scotch on the rocks. no sugar and
very low carb! hahahahaha reg

LOLOL...boy they sure did jump all over your butt....but there were
thankfully others that actually really did read your question. I would love
to know the answer too. If you ever find out...let me know. I actually have
another question for ya...I too have Tricare and I am in DIRE need of a
lift...preferably with implants. I think if I just get a lift...I would be
flat. I had a breast reduction when I was 17 so all of the extra was
already removed! I see you posted about it in January...what was their
response?? I would love to hear back from you...

Believe me, you were not the only one wondering the answer to this
question. You were just the only one brave enough to ask it. I also, was
wondering about drinking after surg. I am more of social drinker but would
still like to have a glass of wine at dinner and such, without feeling
drunk. I was told, in my husbands pre-surgery class, that drinking should
be considered 1:3. So, having one drink would be like having 3. Good luck
to you!

GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! As soon as I read your question I wondered how much crap
you were going to get. I'm sorry I
was right. I really enjoyed this board at first, but I'm not here much
because of this stuff. They are so quick to jump all over you. Nut Picker

What ever happened to the phrase 'no question is a bad question'? I don't
understand why people have to be so nasty. By people posting nasty
messages it only discourages others from posting their questions. People
get a grip...we're all adults and if you can't act accordingly then don't
post at all. All questions are valid...whether you like them or not!!
