Question:
I am 8 days post-op & have gotten migraines the past 4 nights/mornings. Any reason?
Is this to be expected? Anybody else experience this? Could it be tied to protein deficiency (I'm trying to do 4, 4-oz. servings of protein shakes a day)? Dehydration (I'm downing at least 48 oz. of water a day? — ageorg (posted on January 28, 2006)

Are you still on pain meds? I have to take Demoral, because I am allergic
to most pain meds, but the Demoral makes me feel like the top of my head is
coming off. You should call your surgeon and make sure it is not
dehydration.

It could be dehydration. Did you used to drink a lot of caffeine prior to
your WLS? Could it be that? I know when I have up caffeine a month or so
before my WLS I had some serious headaches but they eventually stopped. If
they don't stop, call your surgeon. You shouldn't have to suffer with that
kind of pain. Good luck. CONGRATS for being on the 'losing side' : )
Hope you feel better. Smiles, Jenna

I have headaches in the center of my forehead almost every night/early
mornings. My first thought is dehydration. Once I get up and start
drinking water or pretty much any type of fluid, it seems to help. It also
could be caffiene withdrawal if you drank a lot of it prior to surgery.
When in doubt, talk to your doctor.

Audrey, I f you are not tryint to eat some kind of food should be pureed or
very soft foods the shakes are not enough protein for just being out of
sugury. you need to eat some kind of food along with those shakes. The
headaches could also be from the anathesia they used on you in surgery
still working out of your system. if they do not subside be sure to
call you DOC, this is not something that is normal by any means. Marilyn

There are probably a few reasons for the headaches, such as clearing
anesthesia out of your body, which can take days or weeks, side effects of
pain medications, change in fluid balances, and changes in electrolyte
balances. Be patient and things will work through. Follow what your
doctor has told you to do regarding fluids and protein, and let yourself
rest. Your body just had a major shock to its system and needs to figure
out what to do. Shelly

No one mentioned caffeine withdrawal. If a person that is a big consumer of
caffeine goes cold turkey it will cause headaches that may be real bad. As
far as protein deficiency, that takes a long time for your body to react to
that. It could also be the pain meds that you are on or any other meds.

I only know that Demerol and Morphine both, brought on the most horrendous
migraines I have ever experienced. In fact, I would have preferred to have
no medication for the surgery rather than suffer these headaches. Not sure
if this is your problem....but it was sure a problem for me. I suppose you
might say, I'm allergic to these two meds...unfortunately. Regards~
