Question:
Can fruit cause dumping?
I'm having cravings for fresh fruit and so far it's the only sweet tasting food I can tolerate but I'm afraid that sweet fruit might cause dumping syndrome. Does anyone know if that is a legitimate concern or not? Thanks. — Carol M. (posted on July 16, 1999)

Hi,
Everyone is different. Fruit has natural sugars in it. Some people have
problems, so don't. If you must have some fruit, then make sure you try a
small piece when you are at home. (never try new food at a resturant).
Make sure you don't need to go somewhere for a few hours. You will know in
less than 1/2 hour if you can handle fruit. Since everyone is different
about natural sugars, this is the best way to try.
I stay away from all natural sugars because it slows weight loss down. I
had my surgery 11 weeks ago, and I have lost 64 pounds now. I stick to
protein. I won't have to do that for long, and then I can have fruit too.
I can handle natural sugar, it just slows down the weight loss.
Sincerely,
Paula in St.Pete

Yes, this is a legitimate concern. Fruit goes through me
in about 40 minutes time.

I was not a fruit person before surgery but now I crave fruit. I am sick
at least 3 or 4 times a week and fruit does not bother me. I LOVE
Watermelon, cantalope, strawberries, peaches etc. I do not eat other
sweets, chocolates, cakes, candy etc. it bothers me a lot, but fruit is
good for you.
